RE: High line works with Luiz playing

I dunno why that article was closed for comments!?? I'm baffled.....

Anyway carrying on, I disagree.

You can't say that a system like that works because of 1 player. Doesn't make sense at all. A high line only works if your attackers defend from the front. EVERY player needs to chase the ball to retain possession asap.

As for yesterday against Genk, it cannot be denied that Luiz is a great footballer, I wouldn't say defender....yet!

Anyways yesterday we were getting caught out with over the top balls by a 'pub team' so clearly the high line does not work as our players further up the pitch fail to press the opposition effectively.

Dunno what game anyone else was watching to suggest that it was working

It's true that the success of the high line depends on the whole team, but it's always going to concede chances, and those chances are most often going to come from balls played into the space behind the line.

In this respect, it's essential to have a fast CB who can get back quickly enough to break up or at least hold up the attack. That's why Pep's always gone for a smaller CB when Puyol's been out, and that's why it requires a guy in the D.L. mould.

Yes it will concede chances, but if that high line is used effectively by all players, then the oppositions chances will be flustered, rushed and not deployed exactly how they would like.

It just an impossible strategy to have working if the whole team does not adhere to constant pressing. It does require a D.L mould yes but even with him there we were getting carved open with balls over the top by a lesser side. A better side could have exploited us to devastating effect.

Sure. I'd also add that it requires a very high degree of tactical/positional discipline from the CBs. From what I've seen (which isn't that much tbf), DL seems to like to bomb forward quite a bit, which isn't bad in itself, but the opportunity has to be carefully chosen. Although he might still lack a bit of experience at the highest level, it's something that an intelligent player will master in time.
