Forget trying to get him on a Bosman. We wouldn't be able to afford his wages if Chelsea or City come calling and we can't afford to slip up in the race for 4th this season.
Offer 5M to Bolton in Jan and an attractive long term deal to Cahill. Bring in Cahill and along with Kos, make them the CB pairing. Move Vermaelen to LB and forget about defensive problems for the 2nd half of the season.
Cahill in January

Mertersacker

Cahill
As our 4 CB with Bartley backing them up.
Sell both JD & Squid.

moist - Wenger was interested in Cahill in the summer. So you are fine with him going to a direct 4th place rival for a cut-price deal but don't want him at Arsenal.

Don't go putting words in my mouth young man!
Not a case of what I "don't want", more a question of being realistic.
Vermaelen, Koscielny & Mertesacker are going to have to jostle for position being the starting pair (Vermaelen if fit will be a nailed on starter).
I'd imagine Cahill would not want a move where he would be on the bench a lot of the time, so a move to Spurs seems a logical conclusion.
Not a bad player, but make no bones he's not great, I'd put Koscielny ahead of him for sure. As always his nationality seems to have increased his reputation.
Be a decent squad player mind, but like I say, I'd imagine he's after nailed on 1st team action...

LOL move Vermaelen to left back to suit Cahill
While we are at it lets move Song to center back so Frimpong can play and Van Persie to right wing so Chamakh can play

cahill looks traumatised though.
Not convinced he is really good enough for us.

BO$$ - Imagine our defense with the team you put up.

We do need a fourth string to our bow in centre back position if we
offload Squillaci and also Djourou who is fairly fragile and has just 18 months left on his contract.
The issue with Cahill is not so much his wages but where he wants to go. Personally I cannot see Arsenal paying a transfer fee
for him. If they have to do that then there are better options.
Bolton will be desperate to sell in January, but the decision may be taken out of their hands if player decides to sign pre contract agreement.
Cahill is probably is I am sure upset with Bolton, because they demanded too much money last summer when he should have been allowed to leave. His performance level may have dropped as consequence of this.

batmanu - No, I want to put Verm at LB to solve our LB problem - in case you haven't noticed, Santos seems to be a Roberto Carlos kind of LB and Gibbs isn't good enough YET. And with Cahill and Kos, we will still have a good CB pairing.

Bolton will be desperate to sell in January,
==========
Why?
Whats changed in the last 3 months that makes that the case?
If anything they will be more desperate to hang onto him for the rest of the season, considering they are currently dwelling in the relegation places.
It makes no sense to turn down big offers in August then accept a smaller offer in January. Ever less sense when you are struggling like Bolton.

It also makes more sense for Cahill if he stayed. thus he would have a far greater say in his future.

Yet you assume for some reason that Vermaelen who hasn't played there for years is going to solve the problem? Santos is adapting to England at the moment and is playing far more than he himself has probably expected to, Gibbs who I thought at the start of the season was not ready yet has actually performed very well whenever he has started and should be our first choice when he comes back.
Moving our best defender to a position he has not played in years is not going to solve anything, in fact we will probably end up being worse.
