History of match fixing

I thought given the current situation this might be an interesting read:

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2010-08-30/top-stories/28314956_1_indian-bookie-indian-players-hansie-cronje

Out of curiousity does anybody know if Herschelle Gibbs and Nicky Boje ever had to serve time in prison or bans for their roles in the Hansie Cronje affair. Was just wondering because I remember during one of South Africa's tours to India a few years ago there was a lot of sympathy for them because the police wanted them for questioning, a sympathy obviously lacking for Amir, Asif and Butt.

Gibbs and Boje were wanted by Indian police but they dodged any tour in India until the dust settled but we all know that Hansie took the blame for the whole team and members like Pollock and Boucher were also saved.

Is that due to ignorance at the time or something else? I remember being on holiday in India during the Pakistan England test where Hair accused the Pakistanis of ball tampering. The media and commentators in India were very anti-Hair however when I returned to the UK I noticed that the British media seemed to be much more supportive of Hair's stance up until the point of his removal. Could this perhaps be one of the reasons for 1 set being punished more heavily than the other? That those from the sub-continent are much easier targets for western media? Personally I believe that all of the players should have life bans and deserve any criminal convictions in the countries they committed their crimes, but surely Gibbs's crime for example was a lot worse? Giving his wicket away for less than 20 directly influences the result, so why has he not been brought to justice?

"Most notoriously, Gibbs was involved in the match fixing affair with former captain Hansie Cronje, who offered him $15,000 to score "less than 20" in the 3rd One-day International of a series. He tearfully claimed to the King Commission of inquiry into corruption in South African cricket that he did not follow through on his side of the bargain, in fact scoring a fine 74. As a result he was banned for only six months. He repeatedly refused to tour India fearing arrest and refused to even speak to Indian Police over the matter. However, Gibbs was named in the South African squad to tour India in the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy, and as a result, he had to meet with Indian Police over his involvement in the match-fixing scandal."

Checked it out on wikipedia, thanks Born United. Guess I was probably a bit too young to remember what happened then clearly enough.

Pakistan Cricket should be banned from playing for 10 -15 years in order to get rid of the cancer with-in and let the next generation have a go at rebuilding cricket for their country...
