Back in the day people wore poppies to remember the dead soldiers and as a reminder of the futility of war... The meaning has changed to supporting the troops at war. Don't wear them, it's anti human.

The meaning as i see it is to pay respect to the thousands of brave men who gave their lives for their country........."lest we forget"

It can't be denied that the poppy is a political statement.

I think it can. No political party or government has ever attached a meaning to it as a symbol - if parts of the population have attached a different meaning, it hardly makes it a political statement.

Political statement my Aarse!

It's both - it still honours the memory and sacrifice of those during the World Wars in particular (as well as all the other wars), but now also goes hand in hand with the 'Help for Heroes' campaign, essentially.
If nothing else, the original meaning should not be forgotten. Imagine where we'd be now if Hitler has got his way...

An argument can be made either way. Like above, I argue that it can be seen as a political statement. Anything that can cause contention can be seen as a political statement in some cases. For example, would it be bad form to wear a poppy if England where to play Iraq next week in a friendly? I would argue that there would be the possibility that it would incite some offence in certain Iraqi communities. As a result, I think that then you have to say, it can be seen as a political symbol.
I doubt this decision was made without a lot of deep thought... I think it's quite a diplomatic decision.

You say diplomatic, I say short-sighted. That such a rotten and corrupt organisation should care about such a symbol causing offence is really quite laughable.
Lest we forget indeed.

Too right. I wonder how the war veterans and their families feel...

Oh do me favour..........
FIFA rules from an ivory tower in Switzerland, they have absolutely no clue about how significant the poppy is to England
It is so important our government will get involved in this row now, mark my words.
And that will prove interesting considering FIFA rules of government intervention into footballing matters.

I hope our FA make a stand but unlike the men that the poppy is representative of, i don't think they have the guts.

They won´t need to, this is a state issue, and the government will be involved.
People need to understand that Rememberance Sunday and this whole time of year is the very essence of our current generation.
