Centre Back

Who was the big black CB for you today? He looked quality.
To be fair you have some quality in your team, we all know that, you have for seasons. But you don't gel. If you're going to buy loads of players it takes time, it did at Man City to be fair, they've being buying lots for a good few seasons and it's only now truly gelled.

Swap him for Kisnorbo, O'Brien, Bromby, Rachubka and £2m?

New players do indeed take time to gel – and when the number is large, the process becomes even slower, because there are so many potential combinations that some can take months to even be tried for the first time in match conditions. For example, if you have two decent players for each of LB LC RC RB (which we do), there are 16 combos that you can field, without even trying some centre backs the opposite way round.

Then look at all the midfield combos we have. Then fail to make your mind up whether the preferred set-up is 4-4-2 or 4-5-1. It's not a recipe for a team getting used to playing together.

Eriksson probably bought four of five players too many in the summer – but you can't say he wasn't egged on by the fans, whose hunger to sign players with the available budget was insatiable.
