JCC Test Rankings 07/11/11

it is time for my regular update of the JCC test rankings to include the Zim V NZ test and the Pak v SL series

Zimbabwe's valiant effort will unfortunately go unrewarded in my rankings, despite the fact they came very close to beating New Zealand. However the JCC rankings are all about results, not should'ves would'ves and could'ves. Pakistan's series win against SL may prove to mark a turning point in the direction of test cricket with Pakistan moving into the top set of teams and SL moving into the bottom. This, of course, will not happen immediately, but in time this man thinks it will, because without vaas and murali, i can't see SL taking 20 wickets.

Here are the Updated Rankings:

1 England 239
2 India 181
3 South Africa 163
4 Australia 151
5 Sri Lanka 118
6 Pakistan 89
7 New Zealand 64
8 West Indies 55
9 Bangladesh 14
10 Zimbabwe 6

and the alternative ranking

1 England 144
2 India 104
3 South Africa 94
4 Australia 40
5 Sri Lanka 18
6 Pakistan -50
7 New Zealand -92
8 West Indies -123
9 Bangladesh -129

Good rankings! well they are if your the top of list. Being Bangladesh aint good when your minus an 129..
If the west-indies manage to win the test series in India what effect will that have on the ranking lists?.

if the west indies win they will move above new zealand in the original rankings and close the gap somewhat in the alternative. if india lose they will lose some points because i will scrubb of the points that india gained from beating the west indies at home last time.

if england lose to pakistan they will lose a few pints, but not all that many because they drew their last away series against pakistan i think. Same goes if england lose to SL (i think, i can't remeber of the top of my head) and the point to this ranking system is just to try out some different mthodologies and formulas to work out the test rankings, to see if they are as effective as the ICCs own.

England lost 2-0 in Pak last time.

srilanka have no chance of winning against any team tbh. The only way srilanka can win is if the others actually lose it for them. Now coming to the england pakistan series..... I believe pakistan will win by atleast 1 margin, and that would be enough for india to go on top, because then england will come down to 120. and what india need to do is win 3-0 against wi and 2-0 against australia and india will be at 121. Now that also depends on southafrica drawing with australia in this current series and not win by more than 2-0 against srilanka later in the year. So being fairly positive that all these results are going to happen india will be back to its no.1 postion.

in which case england's points will remain unchanged if they lose or improve if they win

and viruda, judging purely on how the current WI test is going, i really can't see that happening. i do agree with you about sri lanka though, they have no bowling and sooner rather than later, pakistan will overtake them in not just my rankings, but the ICC rankings aswell.
