Fixie Bike

Hello one and all.

Anyone got any experience of fixed gear cycling?

Just got a bike with flip flop hub and it's set as single speed freewheel at the moment. Should I make the leap to fixed? Are toe straps a must have? Any advice welcome...

Toe clips & straps essential yes. Give it a go & practice slowly on quiet road, maybe an empty carpark, till you get the feel of it - strange at first but worth doing. Have fun.

Good advice Tam but could I also add Hi-Viz jacket and a decent helmet (safety first fun last)

I saw a sweet looking fixie last night but I don't think they are for me.

There were no brakes on the handle bars so I can only assume the only brake he had was the back wheel for someone like me who puts speed before safety that approach is not really the best idea.

I don't think I can get my head around that concept at all.

Maybe that was a track only bike,as a road bike would need a front brake to be legal in the UK anyway. Saw a nice looking fixie in my local bike shop this week & it has two conventional caliper brakes, probably a safer option, though some time trial specialists will sacrifice a rear caliper to save weight.
