Jones isn't at the level of Essien in his prime yet. However was Essien as good at the age of 19 as Jones is already? I honestly don't know the answer, but Jones could be as good as Essien in CM, but he'd have to play there reguarly or forget it.

Out of your long rant the only one that has been said by United fans is future England captain is Jones... none of the others you have listed have been said to be future England captains or called world class

Jones does very much look like he could be a future England captain as well so I don't see why your getting so annoyed here...

Is it because some people said some nasty things about Henderson and Carroll.... I am sorry but they don't look all that great at the moment... that however is not Jones, Smalling or Welbecks fault...

Smalling has been talked up as a future centre back with Jones... that seems fairly realistic considering the main challengers are Cahill who is a good few years older (the other challengers are in their 30's) and Martin Kelly who between injuries and other things isn't even playing that much in the Liverpool team... so yes I am sorry to say Smalling does look like a future England centre back...

Lastly Welbeck, most of his competition is a bit older, Bent, Zamora, Defoe and Crouch are all no spring chickens, so even if they beat Welbeck to a place in the side they will only be warming his spot...

The contenders around his age are Sturridge, who has a similar level of ability (I imagine they will both be in future England teams) and Carroll who I am sorry but looks a long way from an England place at the moment...

I think the big difference is United fans are actually talking up future England players whereas Liverpool fans were talking up Carroll and Henderson who I cannot see managing anything but being on the fringes of future England squads...

We are both have been talking up our future talent except ours actually looks like future internationals and quality players... Liverpools the less said the better...

Assuming Jones is future England captain then his place is pretty nailed down... leaving one centre back spot to fight over (in the future) which is what the paragraph was basically about, even if Cahill does keep Smalling out the spot would go to Smalling after Cahill, though I don't think Cahill would keep Smalling out of the England team for long...

I would agree atm Smalling is better than Jones at CB, but I think Jones has the potential to be a better CB than Smalling has the potential to be...
