Great start

Steve McClaren must have been mindful of the maxim that you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. For him, today, was a new beginning in English football.

That is how he set about taking the opportunity to make a stunningly good first impression; nothing short of a masterclass in handling the media. Polished, charismatic, positive, respectful, knowledgeable, he confidently exuded enthusiasm for the challenge that lies ahead talking in glowing terms about the football club.

Without being arrogant, he dismissed the notion that he was here to prove a point after his failed England encounter. He also expertly handled questions more intent on exploring his missed opportunity with Aston Villa and the inferred stain still on his reputation than the opportunity at Forest.

You might accuse me of being easily swayed, but I have been hugely impressed by Steve McClaren today. Of course, fine words butter no parsnips. It's what happens on the field of play that matters most and he was quick to reassure any doubting supporters that he isn't about to depart from the style of play for which our club is renowned.

He might take a little longer to win the hearts and minds of some Forest supporters because, let us be honest, they can be a short sighted lot, but he started off on the right foot. I have renewed optimism that the club can move forward from this point. Billy was a good football man, but his continual public rage was unsustainably toxic; the club was being badly damaged by it. As much as I liked him, he had to go.

I look forward to the rest of the closed season. Let's hope that Steve can attract some quality signings, develop some of our own players and get us promoted. He, like the rest of us are under no illusions that it will not be easy, but he is easily the most experience manager we have had at the club in a very long time. With the right backing, and a bit of luck, we have every chance.

Good post FJ.

I also am feeling very positive about the future which is amazing when you think we have just got rid of a manager whom I held in high regard.

Maybe if BD had inserted a bit of humour into some of his comments he would have got away with it.

King McClaren has shown he can 'talk the talk'...now he has to show if he can 'walk the walk'

Im growing more optimistic about Steve by the day.

I liked BD very much and was angered when he was fired, the thing with McClaren is everyone just looks at his England tenure, look at his club record, that tells you it all.

Ive seen people say 'he doesnt know this league'

Did he know the Dutch league? The culuture? The language?

Absolutly not, if he can atrract some good players from Europe who fit into our play then we'll be ok.

Im not expecting automatic promotion, its going to be a very tough, tight league this season. Im just hoping we can get at least a top 6 finish (minimum expectation ND should have told SM)
