Brand Beckham

I'm fasinated as to how much interest, even at 36, Beckham is able to generate.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2065929/David-Beckham-sign-PSG-deal-worth-11-6m.html

We all know, he's a marketing machine but 11.6 million for 18 months work. It's staggering. PSG will struggle to sell enough kits, merchandise, etc to get even half of that money back.

You would also be worried about the players he'd be facing. Yes, the French League is not the Premier League but it's a hell of a lot better than the States.

Players like Gourcuff and Hazard would have him for breakfast

Bechams been a good servant for club and country but you wonder if he could be making the wrong move

Anyone else watch that video of Pirlo and Becks having shots at a tyre tied to a crossbar. Pirlo hit everyone. Becks didnt :O

Anyway its good for him, Euro football is obviously better then the MLS, its good for him to end his career in a continent where he is repected for his football skills not his celeb status.

I like Beckham as a guy, and think he was a quality servant for United, and it's good he's stayed a loyal fan of the club, but I really think Beckham is the most over rated footballer ever. Can you seriously think of anyone else more over rated?

He was class for United, and had the occasional great game for England, such as the epic Greece performance, but he was nothing special at Madrid, did nothing at Milan, and even LA Galaxy didnt get a great deal off him on the pitch until this season. Even if he had played well in LA, it would have been nothing to write home about, as it's literally a Mickey Mouse league filled with players barely better than the amateur/semi pro game. He went there too early in his career chasing the cash and LA lifestyle at the expense of his football.

It also fills me with dread that Pearce is already saying that Beckham at 36/37 is one of his key considerations for the Olympic squad. What has he done on the pitch to deserve that place, when there are only 3 players who can play as over aged who have ideally not been in the Euros?

We should be looking at the likes of Joe Cole, Michael Owen, Giggs, Bale, Fletcher or even some of the fringe players who dont make the Euros. Imagine if someone like Adam Johnson doesn't get a place in the euros. Even players like Lampard and Rio aren't nailed on given the latters fitness problems and formers competition in the centre midfield spot. However you can almost guarantee golden balls will get special treatment, and get a place as pay back for a bit of schmoozing during the voting process.

Unfortunately as SAF spotted Brand Beckham over took player Beckham at the end of his United career and he's lived off the hype ever since. I actually look at Madrid, Milan, LA and Paris and and think more about posh spice and brand Beckham than the player, and I'm sure his team mates at PSG will too if he ends up there.

He's a good pro, no doubt, and had a lot of talent, but nothing like the amount to warrant his demi-god status and at 36/37 it's time to move on!

Hardly overrated. He won it all clubwise. How can you be overrated when you play at the highest level and win.

Because he's treated like a demi-god and he isnt one, and at times he's been treated like the best player in the world and he's never been remotely close to that.

He's never even been the best player in any of his teams let alone in the world, other than in LA which hardly counts, and Donovan may even argue with that.

As for winning things at some of the teams meaning he can't be over rated, I dont agree that this automatically makes you correctly rated no matter how lofty someones opinion of you is. You can still be under rated or over rated, otherwise we could all start treating Gibson as a demi god and if anyone challenges that by saying come on thats over rating him a bit, you can just say he wins things at the highest level clubwise. He won the league last year, and he's won league cups and even the world club cup.

As I said Beckham was a class player for United, but since the end of his United days he's got far more attention than his talent alone warrants, and is certainly not worth that attention now at 36/37 versus a lot of less well regarded players with more playing value.

I think George Best summed it up the fact he's over rated quite well, if a little facetiously, when Beckham was nominated in the WPOTY group. He said: "you can say he's got a good right foot but he's not got a left.

"Beckham didn't deserve to be elected best player in the world. When he can do something else apart from cross perhaps he will."

"He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's all right."

Maybe harsh, and attention seeking, as I certainly think Beckham was a top class player for United, but versus the adulation he get's and still does, I can see why someone of genuine world class talent would say the things Best did.
