BrotherYoung84 reckons we don't talk enough about soccer.
I like soccer. But I prefer to call it football.

kal it was us that originally called it soccer back in the day. It comes from Association Football as opposed to Rugby Football so you got Soccer and Rugby to tell them apart.
But somewhere along the way we claimed Football back from rugby and soccer was dropped.
Someone must have forgotten to tell the Septics

Not sure Kal but those old Pathe news reels about the FA cup finals of yesteryear refer to Association Football or Soccer so I am guessing sometime in the late 40s early 50s

Wiretapper's right, it was originally called soccer by the upper-class twits who also played rugby etc in order to differentiate it from other foot and ball games.
But I think, once it became popular among the working class, it was football all the way, mibbe as early as the late 19thc.

I did not know that!!! I heard a few commentators refer to it as "soccer" in really old games but i thought it was an unofficial name and football was always the official one.
