You keep mentioning your Arsenal example, so here it is:
"Let's see.. I mean who wuda thunk it about arsenal. On par for a quadruple, lose the cc and end up being shafted... "
Apart from the fact that Arsenal weren't on for the quadruple (by the end of February, it was pretty clear that United would need to go on an epic slump if they were to be caught by anybody), their loss in the CC and their drop in form was pure coincidence. Arsenal's form always nosedives in March.

What?? i know loads of great jokes that are complete fiction where does it state that good jokes have to be based on any facts at all? what a stupid thing to say.
........................................
Well there needs to be some real world knowledge for the joke to be based on, for example if you were making a joke in regards to Irish people and getting drunk then it has some kind of factual basis (at the very least it is a fact that Irish are stereotyped as heavy drinkers)
Or even take the two blondes walk into a bar... you would have thought one of them would have seen it. This is because the walk into part can imply entering the bar or walking into the wall that is part of the building...
If the joke contains a lie or an error as Swales did then it does pretty much fall flat on its face...
That is what I meant by factual, as in correct as in error free
For example, two blondes entered a bar... you would have thought one of them would have seen it. Due to my error the joke fails...

fff - the Re-birth:
But look how they have responded to the 8-2 this season, and Spurs with the 5-1 and even Man Utd (1-6) Liverpool (4-0) have gone on long unbeaten runs after heavy defeats.
If any of us could succesfully predict the scores or even the finishing posistions of the EPL we would all be retiring to a sunny beach somewhere to count our dosh, and Bookies would be jumping from high windows every week.

If you had bet on United to win the premier league every season since it started you would be on that sunny beach by now.

the fact we've seen one off games have a bearing on a teams whole season (see arsenal for reference) i think my point does have some validity in it - may be a long shot but hey thats football!
---------------------------------------
In 2003-04, Arsenal and United met in the semi-final. United won. After that game, 8 games were left for both United and Arsenal in the Premier League. United lost 3 of them, Arsenal lost none. Both teams won 4.
But then of course there was last season's semi-final between City and United. After that game there were 6 games left in the Premier League. City won 5, United won 3. Both teams lost one game.
Conclusion? If such a cup game does have an affect on the league, it can be both positive and negative for the winning team. It can be both positive and negative for the losing team. Meaning that no matter what the result, it's impossible to say what affect it will have on the league title.
Or it could just not have any affect at all.
As for Arsenal, even if we ascribe to the idea that losing a one-off game can impact upon the remaining games of the season, then it has to be pointed out that there's a bit of a difference between losing a final and going out of a competition at the first hurdle. After all, Liverpool went out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle last season. In the remaining games in the Premier League after that, Liverpool went on a run that saw only Chelsea and United accumulate more points than them.
