Fickle Fickle Fickle

In 2005 Manchester United crashed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Benfica. A defeat which then seen them suffer the shame and embarrassment of finishing bottom of their group and therefore being unceremoniously dumped out of the European Cup at the group stages.

The public outcry was deafening. The players weren't good enough. Fergie had lost it. The empire was crumbling etc etc. As United fans I'm sure all of us heard it all.

Since that fateful night Manchester United have won four league titles, three league cups, one Fifa Club World Cup and one Champions League(whilst also reaching two finals).

Now is not the time to panic. Yes I am as every bit as disappointed as every other United fan but now is not the time to villify our players. Now is the time to get behind them and show them our support.

Most importantly of all now is the time to show our faith and belief and support in the greatest manager that ever lived, Sir Alex Ferguson. This man has risen Manchester United to heights that nobody forseen. For 25 years he has battled and battled and more importantly won. He's already taken on one filthy rich club in the form of Chelsea and won, conquering Europe in the process.

Now he faces his greatest challenge of all. For at home he is faced with the millions of City and in Europe he is faced with the brilliance of Barcelona. Get behind the team you fickle fickle fickle fans and repay Ferguson's enduring dominance with just a little bit of faith.

Lets not forget you were filthy rich too...............then the yanks turned up......

Seriously, as an outsider I can understand how you are disappointed, but lets get a grip here, one idiot on another forum was calling for Sir Alex to resign, I stopped reading and logged out of the site at that point.

You're going to have your collective chains yanked, but so what, that comes with being a football fan

Good post... I was sat with 60,000 Benfica fans in 2005 and it was not a happy day. But the next season, we really stepped up.

I see the resident wums have a new panto villain in Ashely Young... I admit, he had a bad game, but bloody hell... so did most.

Anyway, league is most important, always has been, always will be... Let's hope we can get our season back on track and give City something to worry about

Actually what is laughable is the unwillingness to admit weakness in the squad !

It's clear as anything, I guess not through red tinted specs though.

Maybe if you are fairly new to UTD, sure. Some of us remember much weaker squads (you only have to go back to Dec 2005!).

It's got nowt to do with rose tinted glasses... we are just not the sorts that have to have 25 world class players to still trust in a squad and manager.

If we don't buy in January and win the league, or FA cup, I except that you will be celebrating, right?

Massive over reaction from some people...

One of the main reasons we failed in this CL group is because we didn't take it seriously enough...

We managed a draw in Benfica with back up players who had barely played that season, that was back when we were in form and if we had put a first team out there we could have possibly won it...

We dominated last night but one bit of sloppy defending and one bit of bad luck (Vidic flooring Smalling) led to their goals...

We had the ability to go through in that group but just didn't show it, It is not nice but it is not the end of the world either...

Just don't make the same mistakes next year..
