Sorry to be digging up an old issue again, but came across this article on cricinfo by mike brearly:

Have to say that I do feel sorry for the guy. Even though, he was very young and probably manipulated by bookies and his seniors, he should not have done what he did.
Saying that, I do believe that his ban should be slightly reduced though. After 5 years (or even 3 years) there is probably less than a 50/50 chance that he could return to what he was. What a bloody shame - this guy was all set to be one of the best bowlers today. It's a huge loss for pakistan and just cricket in general.
I'm an indian fan btw. Just venting - not really bothered if this isn't topical at the moment.

He looked awesome! Seriously good.. He is so young & i can't imagine the amount of pressure on him so i do think he deserves a second chance.
I do hope he comes back & sets the world a light!!!

Have to agree with you Titus. What he did was wrong but there was no doubt he was pressurised as it was said by the judge and he reportedly made 2k out of all this affair. A jailterm and 5 year ban is very harsh for someone who was not protagonist in the whole affair.
I do hope the PCB hell him when he comes out and hopefully he will find opportunities to educate other youngsters to stay away from this crime.

my heart goes out for this youngster but I try to refrain myself from mentioning this as I thought it would attract some stick from the neutral fans. But to see this coming from neutral fans feels good. We can only hope ICC reviews the ban that has been put on him and we see him back sooner.
In the mean while I do feel that the strictness that ICC has shown to him will serve as a good example for the upcoming youngsters. I remember an article on cricinfo that was written by an Indian writer, the title was 'Saving the next Amir' while this spot fixing saga appeared. May be some of you have read that, it really was a touching piece.

I suppose they are stuck between a rock & a hard place in the fact that if they let him off they look week & other youngsters won't learn & if they ban him then it's unfair on the young lad..

Either this conviction will hang over his head, or he will come back as someone who has a lot to prove and justify, that could make him even more motivated to perform.
