With 24hour media, transfer gossip nowadays just seem to be desperate. I remember just prior to signing Eric Cantona we were linked with David Hirst. In retrospect it was a good job that speculatio didn't pan out.
What potential transfers that were muted in the media do you think would have made the largest difference to our success (positive or negative) over the last two decades?
transfers that never happened

I think he was pretty much offered to most of the top clubs at the time.

Wenger claims to have been close to signing every world-class player in the world, and then ends up signing Chamack.

If we had signed Shearer in 96, we would have done a lot better in Europe

Why? We had Cole who scored nearly as many Shearer. Our problem then is that we played 442 very naively, Especially away.

To be fair David Hirst was a top player back in the day he was just very injury prone, i think Juve were interested in him as well, but Eric did alright for us in the end i suppose. I know a lot of United fans are a bit bitter on shearer but we did ok with Cole, Yorke, Ole then Van Nistelrooy didn't we?
I am still disappointed we didn't get Aaron Ramsey though, i don't know why he chose Arsenal over us, he would still have improved as a player with us, he would have got games and he would be in the hunt for trophies, when will these players learn eh

Yes I agree but we still created lots of chances. Cole was a decent striker but Shearer would have scored a lot more playing for us

The thing that people forget about Shearer is that he took all the penalties and most (if not all) free kicks in a shooting position, which defiantly added to his goal tally and he wouldn't have had that opportunity at United with Giggs, Beckham, Cantona ,even Bruce was on free kicks and penalties at one stage. He also played for very good Blackburn and Newcastle teams in his career. Also at United the forwards are expected to get involved with the build up play as well as score goals, would he have scored as many if he had to come short and link up?
