Newcastle for top 4?

In amongst all the wumming of United tonight, something overlooked is the fact that Newcastle are there in amongst Liverpool and Arsenal in the league.

With half the season gone, is it now only fair to include them as top 4 contenders? With some excellent players and a striker in red hot form I'd be tempted to class them as favourites over Liverpool.

Thoughts?

I doubt it. I wish we could, but honestly I just think that we don't have the strength in depth to compete with the top 4 or 5 over the long term. We did well tonight with what is pretty much our best line up but, as we saw against Chelsea, a few injuries can really mess us up.

Truthfully, at the beginning of the season if you'd told me we could finish in the top half I'd have taken that with a huge smile on my face. That we maybe have a shot at a Europa place is amazing considering the wealth that we're up against.

Top half of the table and finishing above the mackems (obviously) and its a good season as far as I'm concerned :D

I really can't see it to be honest but we have a shot at the Europa. If we can pull that off then I will be over the moon.

Didn't think we could manage top half of the table at the beginning of the season.

If we hadn't lost our 3-0 lead against West Brom last season, we would have had got 9th place..

you were absolutely fantastic tonight. dominated the midfield. Getting rid of Caroll for Ba + £35m is the deal of the century. How good was he tonight? Good luck for the rest of the season.

I don't think you can do it this season, to be honest. You're playing really well, but you're not quite on the pace of Arsenal and Chelsea, the two teams you'll need to peg back in order to get in there.

But I reckon sixth is a decent shout. If you can get Cabaye to fill the sizeable hole left by Ba's departure for ACON, you should be able to keep up with Liverpool. And there's a potential Europa League spot up for grabs there.

Good luck for the rest of the season. Although I'm hoping you'll have an off day on May 5th.

I think top 4 will be a tough ask but I don't think top 6 is out of the question. People keep saying Newcastle are going to struggle without Demba Ba and Tiote and granted they are quality players, but look at their fixtures over January...

Blackburn (h) FA Cup
QPR (h)
Fulham (a)
Blackburn (a)
Villa (h)

No disrespect to those teams but Newcastle are definitely capable of getting 7 or 8 points from those 4 PL matches even with their players missing. Suppose it depends how well their teams do though as if they get to the final they will miss the spurs match, even if they get to the semi final they will probably be to tired to play in the spurs match 3 days later.
