Are Man Utd now living on their past reputa

Watcing the last two perfofmances of our rivals,it would appear that the walls are tumbling down.
Now before I get accused of being a deluded and bitter LFC.fan, let me explain my thoughts on making the above statement.
The performance of the Man Utd team over the last two games has been absymal by any standards. It,to me,has highlighted deficiantcies both in defence and midfield areas.Teams in the past may have given MU too much respect,(and rightly so which does greive me to say but none the less is true imo)
But it seems in the last two games at least, that teams are going for the sofy underbelly now exposed, which as a lover of LFC and attacking football, can only be good for the game. Why this is happening at this point in time,I can only guess at.Maybe what has happened in the last few week has a bearing on this, who knows.
This coupled along with being knocked out of the Champions league at the group stage, dumped out of the Carling Cup by Palace at home,Spanked by the bottom club in the PL at home, being spanked 6-1 by the noisy neighbours at OT,leads me to beleive MU are now and for some time, living on a past reputation.
Am I alone in this belief.......

Mr mortimer,
Very valid point regarding the Blackburn game,I stand corrected using the word "spanked" in that context.
Regarding Vidic being a world class defender,I am not so sure,he does seem to give silly fouls away and picks up too many red cards etc for my liking, coupled with the fact he seems to be picking up injuries at the moment which would be worrying if I were the manager.Agree he will be a miss though, which again comes down to squad strength, imo.

I think Vidic is world class, and I rate him far higher than Ferdinand for Man Utd.

I agree he gives away some silly fouls... although bookings and dismissals I think the "big club factor" means he doesn't pick up nearly as many of these as he would if he was playing for Bolton. (No disrespect to Bolton.)

He is a big miss because he is the central point of the defence and seems to command the line.

Totally agree about squad depth though, the quality isn't there in some areas... and this is made even worse by the abundance of quality on the City bench nowadays! In some senses though it means the CL exit is a blessing in disguise as the squad won't be too stretched and the first team players barring injury should play every game.

True, spank was the right word to use for 6-1 but it tends to wind people up as no one likes to lose let alone get spanked, erm........you know what I mean

Mrmortimer,
Very valid point regarding CL exit, but still have the distraction of Europa, still need to travel, still need to put a team on the park.
However, good chance to use some of the youngsters, imo.
Anyone we are likely to see, should this option be taken up?

Yes the Europa one will be a distraction... although I wouldn't be a t all surprised if Utd put out a complete second string side. The competition won't interest them in the slightest... and nor should it really. When Fulham got to the final it was a fantastic achievement, the same with Rangers a few years back - for us it was great. For Man Utd though it is nothing.

(I'm not a Utd fan by the way! How dare you! lol)

Every time we suffer a particularly bad defeat or get a bad run of results people seem to come out with this opposition actually willing to go for it lines. For years now we have had occasional blips and a lot of people get very excited and say that teams will now have the confidence to go at them...

Then suddenly United go on another run of good results people forget all about it and here we are again, we have suffered two bad results in a row and all of a sudden this means opposition teams have once again figured out we are actually rubbish.

What is the betting that we go on another run of good results and this is all forgotten and it will come up again next time we lose a game or two. Maybe clubs realise we are rubbish and then suddenly forget after a few games and that is how we are so successful ?

Or maybe even the best teams can have some bad results and it is nothing to do with the whole of England suffering some kind of collective amnesia... I have never been into my conspiracies much though so don't let me dissuade you.

Captain7,
Valid comments and they will be taken on board.
I never under estimate any one or anything and would not under estimate your teams recovery abilities.
However, forgive me if I am wrong, but I thought my comments were based on the facts as they are at this moment in time. Not on what could happen,or what might happen or what has happened in the past!
Read the title of this atricle and pray tell me what you base your comments on.

The title by itself doesn't really say a lot...

The main thing I was getting at was your assumption that Man United only win games because the opposition don't think they can win but that now United have lost a few games people will no longer be afraid of them and this is the beginning of the end...

We have had worse blips in the past, where teams must have also suddenly realised we were beatable (even more beatable) yet still we managed to recover and do well even in those bad seasons (by most peoples standards though not to our own)

So it has happened in the past (some bad results) and inevitably then people also come out with the "Now people can see that United are beatable they will actually try to beat them"

Inevitably we also went on and continued to be successful...

I am not completely dismissing the whole reputation or form throughout the season can have an effect on opposition players...

But are City suddenly going to come crashing down because they went out of Europe struggled against a Fulham team that United hammered and lost to Sunderland.... no probably not, they got all their good results because they are such a good team, not because the opposition looked at their form and decided they wouldn't win from the start.

Captain7.
I dont think that City will come crashing down etc.I honestly think they are on the crest of a wave, and as long as there owners remain able to pay the transfer fees and pay the wages and are able to set up a good youth system, then they will go on to claim alot of trophies.
Where do the rest of the teams stack up at this moment in time?
