Liverpool overcame Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield on Friday night after an early scare.

The Reds started the game awfully and allowed Oldham to control the game in the early stages. The Latics had a couple of chances to make Liverpool's lethargy pay before they eventually got their deserved goal on 28 minutes. It was a goal to remember for Robbie Smith, who connected perfectly with a bouncing ball from 30 yards to send it into the top right corner.

But their lead lasted less than two minutes, as Liverpool scored a fortuitous equaliser on the half hour mark. Jonjo Shelvey took a shot from the right which took a massive deflection off Craig Bellamy and wrongfooted Oldham goalkeeper Alex Cisak to go in.

On the stroke of half time, Liverpool were ahead. Tom Adeyemi brought down Maxi Rodriguez in the box, and Steven Gerrard stepped up to smash the ball in off the bar.

Oldham continued to look for a way back into the game in the second half but Liverpool were now in control and scored a third on 68 minutes. The excellent Bellamy raced down the right before crossing in for Shelvey to slot in for his first Liverpool goal.

Andy Carroll was introduced three minutes from time, and after just over a minute on the pitch he had added Liverpool's fourth, as he swivelled on a loose ball and lashed it in from 20 yards. And a fifth from Stewart Downing, also his first goal for the Reds, was the icing on the cake as Liverpool progressed to the next round.

The match threads are open for all you tool. Some should explain the main rules of free communication to you.

Gunner it's open to all who want to talk about the game and act grown up. Your comments were stupid and intended to offend.

There weren't too many WUMs tonight, only used the delete button a couple of times. But yeah, there is a good chance that there will be more for the City games.

The match threads are open to those that the OP allows on the threads, particularly when they are on a single board. Our view on non-wum articles is that the OPs should be afforded the protection of having the ability to limit disruption caused by those intent to detract from the enjoyment on fans on their own board.

It is entirely at the OPs discretion..
