GK: Friedel
RB: Walker
LB: BAE
CB: Whoever turns up fit
RM: Lennon
LM: Bale
CM: Parker, Modric, Livermore
ST: Defoe
I feel we need to flood the midfield and restrict the likes of Silva, Nasri (we all know he'll play well against us ), Milner etc and help restrict their strikers of getting the ball.
In defense Parker and Livermore can easily drop deep with Modric staying further up ready to collect the ball for any counter attack situation that could happen, with Defoe in waiting.
In attack, Parker can stay back a bit while Modric attacks further up field and Livermore supports.
With Defoe being the lone striker (not ideal), he has the pace to make their centre backs think, if they go too far forward Defoe might punish them on a counter attack or a Modric-esque through ball.
I don't think VDV is suitable to play this match with no Adebayor up front.

Marseille are still in the CL, i suppose it depends on how much they rate Pav (might be offered to them) + some cash

VDV might be vital but none of our other strikers can play as a lone striker so I feel it would be best to drop him then our strikers basically not being on the pitch.

doo doos :
Would have like to have seen a VDV/Defoe pairing tried out well in advance. But too late now.

But Doo Doo, your original post has Defoe on his own any way. Given the choice, I'd have VdV instead of Pav or Livermore.
I understand the issue with deviating from 4-4-2, with our strikers, but VdV not playing on the right of midfield, but as a number 10, is better than Pav / Livermore being on the pitch. To start with at least.

I've put Defoe up front on his own because he would keep the centre backs back while the midfield dominate the City players, hopefully resulting in one of our amazing counter attacks we do.

The only problem with having Modric, Lennon, VDV and Defoe all playing is size.
Count ourselves lucky that City do not play like Stoke.
But set pieces could still be our downfall losing Ade's height in defence.
