but on a serious note: how is gibson only worth 2 million? ok, he's not world class, but still. 2 million?!

Why are we selling a midfielder? I am not a fan of
Gibson but he are so woefully short in that area
that we should be keeping hold of the players we
have AND signing someone.

If he wont play him EVEN when we dont have midfielders, he really shouldnt stay. Tbh its what the youngsters morisson and pogba are thinking too.

And I guarantee when the 1st choice midfielders aren't available they won't get game time either. Instead Jones or someone else will play out of position.

A lot depends on when his contract expires.
Aside from that, we obviously don't want him and our finances will benefit from getting him off our wage bill. Potential buyers know that too. If a player of Gibson's ability moves from mid-table club to mid-table club the supply/demand equation changes a bit: in this context he's more of an asset to his current club and there is more sense that they are weakening their squad by selling him / have some reluctance to let him go.
Just as when United sign a player, the selling club frequently knows 'they value him as a Man Utd quality player' and therefore get to jack up the price, when we sell someone who hasn't quite made the grade, the cards are slightly stacked against us, unless we can generate a bidding war.

His transfer fee will be cheap because his wages won't be. No club will pay 5-6m for him and then pay 40k a week. It's worth taking a couple of mil hit on the fee instead of paying that each year for him in wages.

I don't like Gibson but selling him when we're have a midfield crisis is a pathetic thing to do !!

And yet you complain that SAF has not signed the worlds greatest players.
He has to get rid of the deadwood first.

For me, I'm glad. I was hoping he'd go in the summer, but apparently he couldn't agree personal terms. I will happily drive him to his next club, and pay for my own petrol.
His contract runs out in the summer, so he will defiantly be going.

to be fair Gibson has not really looked up to it at United, if he goes to Everton then good luck to the lad.
As for the fee who's bothered?

United get shafted for 2 reasosn:
1 - Buying teams know that the player is not United quality and that United want him off the books. They are able to then negotiate better.
2 - Fergie is very loyal to squad players and won't hold them back over a transfer fee. Other managers would let the deal go South for 1 mil here and there but Fergie never does this.

Well if Gibson is as bad as half of the people on here made him to be at times I would be grateful to get £2 million for him.
To be fair whoever signs him will be taking a gamble. Richardson had more about him before he left than Gibson and apart from his first season it hasn't looked like a bad decision to let him go.
£2 million for a hardly used squad player who has played his best games for NI or we can let him go for free in the summer. I know what I would do.
