We were poor all over the pitch yesterday. However Charlton were still fortunate to win as they until they got the goal they did absolutely nothing and Wednesday were looking like they were going to coast it.
Couple of observations from me:
1. Madine and O'Grady as a forward partnership doesn't work as they are too similar. They both need to play with a partner who will either have the pace to run in behind or drop off slightly, in order to create space. We were too predictable and O'Grady won the ball and held it up brilliantly on many occasions only for there then to be nothing on.
2. Once Charlton went 1-0 up we seemed to forget how to play football and played far too many long balls up to our forwards, who then had no support from the midfield. Not the way to score against a team playing defensively.
3. Substitutions. Don't disagree with Megson's decision to change it and go 3-5-2 as we needed to do something. However why not take off Reda and Semi instead of Jones and Marshall and bring on Llera and Prutton? The change actually meant we ended up with more defensive-minded players on the pitch - the two wide players he left on didn't give enough going forwards.
Overall I was very disappointed with the result as I didn't think Charlton were anything special and that game was very winnable for us.
