How The West Was Won.. (and Lost?)

Some time ago Doncaster was a settlement to the West of Cleethorpes. It's main purpose being to allow the indigenous local tribes to meet and exchange their produce, whether grown or killed or made.

Some time later a prospector discovered gold on nearby Mount Barnsley, which in turn triggered "The Great Gold Rush". Doncaster soon blossomed into a large town, its size and ambitions knowing no limits. But, this was short lived, and when the gold ran out, the town started to die, people left to seek fame and fortune in pastures new, and Doncaster became overrun by bad guys who tried to destroy the dreams of the Doncaster people.

One day a young sharpshooter rode into town, who said his name was Billy The Kid. He started to shoot down some of these bad guys and Doncaster began to dream again. But Billy was only passing through and the townsfolk became concerned about their future. They called a meeting and decided that Billy had to be convinced to stay, whatever the cost. Eventually he was persuaded to stay, and the future looked good again. Just when it looked like the bad guys would be overpowered, Billy was shot and during his convalescence Doncaster descended into a period of doom and gloom. Billy recovered and soon started where he left off, but his prowess had not gone un-noticed and other towns tried to tempt him away.

Eventually, Billy could not resist the lure of the bright lights and bigger pay cheques and left.
As he rode out of town on that fateful morning, the question on everybody's lips was "will Doncaster's future be as black as it's gold?".

Don't want to get into a political battle Mickey, but can you tell me where you have seen that Obama is Thatcher in disguise.

I guess you have seen the Iron Lady film, I darn't go as I know I would get thrown out!!!!

I may be wrong, often am!, but hasn't the Obama administration massively increased the Country's coal mining? Sure I read something about it last year

Agree a wonderful story but don't get me going on coal. All this environmental ****. 200 years of perfectly useable energy still under the ground and communities still devastated and in need of employment? It's a no brainer

To some Nookie, Thatcher and McGregor never happened, to others the scars are still there. I prefer to watch Brassed Off rather than Iron Lady. I take every opportunity I can to let the colonists know the true facts about Thatcher.

Hi Micky, I never expected anyone to get Scargill, it is a very tenuous link and he would struggle to be the good guy. Also it was really about Our Billy. I have to admit that I did feel a bit let down when I first heard he was leaving, but I had considered previously that he might benefit from getting away from his personal tragedy, as well as all the other stuff like money.

As far as I am concerned Uni was something that happened to other people. I was delighted, though, when my eldest daughter became the first from either of our families to manage it.

Does it mean that you went to Wath Grammar? I went to Mexborough and I'm sure I can remember going there for the annual Inter-Schools sports day, not that anything else was significant about it.

Say-Lavee, I was born in Donny and went to DGS. It was my parents who had the Wath connection. I can still smell Manvers Main coke ovens! My cousins went to Mexborough.

NY: I'll find some quotes for you and send by email. The difference was Maggie wanted to close inefficient, loss making pits for financial reasons. Obama wants to be out of coal for environmental issues. The Greens in Oregon are trying to stop a plan for a port development to ship coal to China. By the way, I have a DVD of "Brassed Off", and have watched it many times - just as I have "Full Monty".

I know of no intention by Obama to do this, is it put out by Trump who still doesn't believe he (Obama) is an American. I know he is very much for green energy, but I don't see anywhere where he says coal cannot be green.

As with Britain, there is an ample supply of coal for the production of electricity in the States for many, many years.

The difference with the "Cow", is that she did not like one man ( Scargill) and had the wrong impression of miners as beer swilling ignorant wastes of space.

How wrong can you be, with the Bands, Choirs, poets and writers who all worked in the mines. The only people to win under Thatcher were the likes of our former Director, Beresford.

You were over here when the miners strike was in full flow, maybe if you had been in England you might have had a different view.

Two other points from the local Free Press today, 1) The new Thatcher,
( Mayor Davies), now wants to pull the plug on funding the Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra, another stupid decision by a political leader who does not see the broader side of public funding.

2) The death of MP Mick Welsh ( RIP).

By the way, that is my last post of a political nature, I just had to get them off my chest.

My wife often says I would be a much better person if now and again I had an opinion!!!!!!!

I hope my opinions have not upset too many??????

NY, it seems our politics are very much aligned. If we were in a pub having a nice quiet discussion about HER, we almost certainly would get kicked out. My wife is always telling me to calm down.

I like to put The Mayor into a group that "knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing"! That's not to say where I would really like to put him.

We are having a referendum on keeping a mayor in May. Ironically we could vote to get rid of ours whilst the other places voting in Yorkshire decide to have one.
