LIVERPOOL are ready to press ahead with their summer rebuilding programme by stepping up attempts to sign Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam.
But Aston Villa have vowed to keep hold of £19million Stewart Downing, right, and have no inclination to cash in on their prize asset.
Villa owner Randy Lerner is intent on keeping Downing to the two years on his contract.
And new manager Alex McLeish was told that would be the club policy with Downing during his talks with Lerner and it has not changed.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is due back to Anfield next week following a summer break and will make sealing the deals a priority.
The club’s director of football, Damien Comolli, will also try to broker the transfer of Adam with a package of around £10m likely finally to tempt Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston.

If Henderson and Young are both worth 20m, then Downing is worth 30m. I hope this signing comes off. He is exactly the type of playing we need.

squid, you seem to be forgetting that Bentley cost spurs a whopping £17m.
Downing has been a consistent performer in the premiership and his crossing ability would prove an important weapon if he were to join. LFC.
The last player we has who could deliver a nice ball with his left foot from the left was Reira. A player which gave our team some much needed balance. With Carroll now in the team, Downing could be a player who could provide him with the delivery he needs.

We haven't had anyone decent in that positions since Patrick Berger IMO.

...........
Although I've been trying to forget it I haven't managed it yet but I will keep trying...
With transfer deals sometimes you win , sometimes you lose and at Spurs we've had plenty of both..............I only wondered because in all honesty these two players are not really what I would expect from Pool

Not what you expect? Both player of the year for their respective clubs, both young and coming up to their potential. Both looking to move on to achieve their ambitions, whilst hungry for success and both have shown the quality they have. So if these are not the things expected of Liverpool, then I think I have the club all wrong.

Honestly, I don't rate Downing. Hopefully he'll only be a squad player.

Well they are both around 27/28 (not sure of exact age) so not so young ..........Look I'm deff not having a go at your club but for an outsider looking in they do seem strange choice , maybe not so much Downing as he obviously has a lot of talent but Adam has no pace and he had everything set up for him at Blackpool , they played to his strengths ...will Liverpool do that ?????
