just been looking at our remaining fixtures then i thought i would have look at qpr's and after they play us they have the top 6 in the last 10 games and sunderland away as well i think we will get more points than them and cisse is banned for the next 3 games think we could be in a lot better position than them

We shouldn't have to be relying on other teams to do badly.

No that is true but we are looking for at least three teams that are worse than us.

I am very hopeful that next season we will do a lot better, we just need to survive this season and I really think that we will.

Somehow I've only just clocked this thread.

Anyway I agree with those who have pointed out that points per game projections are a waste of time.

I believe 36 points will keep anyone up this season, too.

This is how many points would have keep you up in the last 10 PL seasons, most recent first:

40, 31, 35, 37, 39, 35, 34, 34, 43, 37 (this it to stay up on points - not goal difference)

As you can see, only twice in the last ten years have 40+ points been needed to survive.

LH - I genuinely have never seen those stats presented like that before. Maybe we are all brain-washed into thinking 40pts is the magic number. Certainly managers and the media go on about 40pts.

36pts could well be enough - wow - i am even more convinced now.

I've thought 36 would keep you up all season... Heres to the next 5 wins,1 draw and 8 defeats!

The actual record for defeats and staying up is 21.

So we need 5 defeats to equal the record and 6 to beat it.

It's crazy how often teams have stayed up despite losing 4-5 more than teams who have gone down.

CEF - the 40 point thing is because only one club in the history of the PL has gone down on 40 points, West Ham when we sent them down. It means you're safe 95% of the time.

If we get 40 points this season, we will be safe going into the last game I believe.

Lh - check that, because i'm sure we went down on 40pts when Everton did us on goal difference in 1997. The year of the Taggart over the line disallowed goal.

1997/98 - we did go down with 40pts.

Sorry gents, you are both correct, my last post should have read "more than 40 points".
