Le Saux laments

I read with interest this week the comments of Graham Le Saux and his observations about the lack of support for gay footballers. The fact that there are no openly gay footballers tells it’s own story and is a debate all in itself. What I found interesting was Le Saux’s comments about Robbie Fowler and the incident where Fowler made homosexual accusations at Le Saux on the pitch in front of thousands. Le Saux – who isn’t actually gay but that’s irrelevant – said he was traumatised by the incident and it led to alot of unwarranted anguish and barracking. On an England get together Le Saux confronted Fowler about it and Fowler refused to apologise.

Coincidental that it’s Liverpool again but Fowler has to go down as being a bit of a tool in this example - he always struck me as being up his own backside -, however what grabbed me more was how this compares to the recent headlines. You have racist remarks from Suerez – proven – and JT being accussed of the same. Both have or could face substantial bans but what did Fowler get? Nothing from my memory. Openly making homosexual remarks at a player in front of thousands and nothing happened. Remember this wasn’t that long ago. It certainly brings some perspective to these current events and how things have gone the other way. Because what’s worse, racism or homophobia? The answer is both are as bad and in the case of Fowler the evidence was there but nothing happened.

Fowlers defence was that he suggested Le Saux's reaction to a challenge was "gay". Not defending him per se but is it so different from suggesting someone throws like a girl?

I think Fowler refused to apologise as he said Le Saux had used the insult out of context as he'd often been 'accused' of being homosexual.

Le Saux did apologise for the elbow.

Oh and Fowler got a ban for the gesture, it was added onto his snorting ban...

Yes I recall Le Saux apologising for the elbow. Also, I think if you see the incident it's clear he's not doing it in the context of a tackle, it was cleary done as Le Saux perceived it. What I'm saying is that comparing it to what JT is accused of it was as bad and seen clearly by thousands.

I can't remember the whole thing, I remember Le Saux getting ridiculed for reading the Guardian and wearing polo necks.

However Fiwler did it, he should've apologised. I just think the Suarez and Terry incidents have been blown up due to it being a 'trendy' subject and easy for the 24 hr meeja journalists to earn. Which is why Le Saux is suddenly flavour of the month, merely due to a documentary on the idiot box!
