Expansion

Quote tonight from Eddie on Sky after the Bronco's scored.

'There's not many if any Bronco's fans in the stadium tonight'

Case closed on expansion for me.

Thoughts?

In any business when you try and expand you still need to retain your core customers/products.

Why the RFL think abandoning some clubs to hope expansion works in other areas could be a success is against all business knowledge, it undermines your current customer base.

They could push RL at lower/ground level and then you would see it spring up slowly but surely, trying to do it top down is a failed experiment.

How many times do they have to reinvent the wheel?

They should face facts that RL is never going to be a popular pastime in the Midlands, South, London and parts of Wales.

They've tried pushing the envelope with London far too many times over the years, and STILL it hasn't caught the imagination of the people down there. So they may as well face facts and concentrate on spreading the vibe further north/north-east and take it from there

the game has expanded at an amateur level the sensible level in my humble opinion,I'm able to see Rugby League in Bristol,if they tried to get a professional team here its would fold within 18 months with crowds of 200 or less, the RFL have put a World game here rumour has it Cook Islands v USA not exactly a crowd puller why not an England game give the English fans a day out in Bristol.

2 possibly 3 sports in Brizzle .... footie, yawnion and clicket....

RL i just can't see ever cracking it there. As for a day out in Bristol ..... you are joking right?

Aren't Bristol rumoured to be one of the new clubs joining an expanded Championship 1?

Bristol is a good example of building from the bottom up to create a foundation.

Bristol Sonics could join the national leagues and build interest and players locally, then who knows where that ends. I wish them success it may take a long time but if it does it will last.

The reason for expansion is for the t.v adverts to cover a wider area and the larger the area the more the R/L can demand when the television rights come around......a major sponsor won't put in huge amounts of money if it is only getting aired in the one area.

The pressure to expand will never go away, the R/L are just doing what is right for the game in the big picture of things......it's all about the money from the big end of town and London has the potential to fill the role.

rabbitohs another interesting post, shame that the game is driven by TV revenue not bums on seats as once was. this distorts the game and undermines fans who for years have enjoyed top league rugby to be sacrificed on the commercial alter.

Not even sure the London club with so little support actually makes any difference whether they buy it or not in the capital, be good to see this stat proven but I think so many Northerners and general sports fans down there purchase Sky on the basis of its full package.

I agree in expansion but inderstanding business i realise it cannot be forced or at the expense of current trade
