Is it better to
1)Have a set system of play that everyone understands
2)To try and get the best 11 players on the pitch
If it's a system then we should have at least two for every position within a squad. Who is the best successor to Modric's crown within our existing squad?
Spurs: System or Players?

1 for me (with a realisation that you can never build a perfect 22 man squad)
No one in the current squad can fill the Luka role imo, Tom Carroll if he keeps progressing has a chance, however if we wanted cover/competition for the little man in the summer we would need to look outside the club - e.g. Joe Allen, Christian Eriksen.

If fit - for me the replacement for Luka would be Thudd. Very different players, but Thudd is our other 'creative' CM in my opinion.
I agree that Tom Carroll is similar stylistically to Modders, and maybe in a season or two may have developed enough to be a serious contender for that role. But I have to be honest and say I haven't really seen enough of him to be sure either way - Spurcat would most likely be the man to answer that question.

Alex Pritchard is the new Tom Carroll.

I'd say best XI players over formation, if you build a squad properly this shouldn't be much of an issue anyway.
Let's face it - we haven't got anyone who's a patch on Modric. Neither has anyone else

Pritchard is the small Tom Carroll ( for the boy) .

Hudd is to Modric as Parker is to Sandro.
They are variations on the theme.

Hudd can play both CM (defensive and attacking) & CB in the PL to a decent standard which cannot be said for Sandro, Parker or Modric.
Therefore he is a good utility player to have in the squad (I bet he would also be handy as an emergency GK).
Perhaps Sandro given the opportunity could also do a job as a CB but Parker in his career has neer been known for this.
