Has Wenger always been poor tactically?

Always regarded as a genius, 'le professor' excelled at developing youngsters and turning little-known signings into stars.

Nowadays, Arsenal fans criticise him for not adapting tactics. But Wenger has been playing this way for a long time. Michael Ballack once said, after a 0-3 loss to Chelsea 'Arsenal always play the same way.'

It was easy from 1998-2004, he started with the legendary Arsenal back five and bought attacking talent + Vieira. His eye for a good signing won him those trophies, as well as clearing out the drink culture. Not his tactics, you didn't need to adapt tactics when you had the best team.

Now his team are no longer dominant, he needs to adapt tactics depending on the opposition. But has he ever done this effectively? It seems we've been talking for years about the changes Wenger must make to his teams style, yet here we are still talking about it.

Has Wenger always been limited tactically? Or has he simply declined in this department, or perhaps not moved with the times?

With the emergence of chelsea it was obvious wenger and fergie needed to up their game, and to be fair only fergie really managed it, also i think fergie has the upper hand when it comes to dismantling a team and rebuilding it.

It's not his strong point but I don't think he's that poor tactically, in the same way that everyone who criticises him isn't a tactical genius. He went a season unbeaten, his head to head against Fergie is almost even and some of his teams have have scored massive amounts of goals as well so he's not useless tactically, but our weakness at set pieces and inability to learn from our mistakes shows he's not great either.

Defensively he's clueless, we always had leaders and defenders with great knowledge like Adams, Campbell, Keown who Wenger always trusted so he could focus on attacking. Since all of the above players have gone, it's no suprise we have won zero for seven yrs.

Tactics has never been his strong point. He doesn't get the team to watch videos of the oppo and he doesn't spend much (if any) time looking at how to exploit the oppositions weaknesses. I can't remember the last time he pulled a tactical surprise and tbh out of all the big managers out there I's say tactically he's the worst.

In saying that he's still a true legend and the best manager we've had to date.

Lauren----Sol----Toure----A Cole

was a formidable back four, but made Arsenal deadly was our attacking players....We now have Theo, Ramsey and Chamakh if RVP isn't firing on all cylinders.
