I do think that to a certain extent Suarez has been done over this business. I have spent many years in South America and the term "Negrito" which Suarez reportedly used is definitely NOT viewed as a racist term there. It loosely translates to "friendly little black boy". Black mothers would often lovingly use it when referring to their young sons. The worst that could be said of it in the Suarez case is that when used towards an adult, ie Evra, it may be seen as rather patronising with shades of condescension, but certainly not racist! The female term "Negrita" is equally common. It is most often used as a term of endearment by men towards their black girlfriends. Popular songs, especially in Colombia and Venezuela, are full of it. I would say that the English translation would be something like, "my beautiful (little) black baby". Incidentally, may varieties of drink bear the word "Negrita", including a well known rum which is widely available in Europe. I have to say I feel Suarez has been hard done by and am surprised he didnt defend himself more vigorously. He can NOT be branded a racist simply because he used the term "Negrito"! It in no way equates to the "N" word in English! Another case of galloping western political correctness being ridiculously misapplied. As regards the handshake, why should any man be forced to shake the hand of another who he believes is out to get him and spoil his career!
