Cheltenham

When I was a young lad, this place was somewhere older people retired to, not a mecca of football. Credit to them, they are trying their best to make it so.
It's not a ground where, after nearly 50 years watching Town, I have been to. I drove thro' the place once 'cos the motorway was closed - never again!

Now I rely on public transport to get me to a game. Cheltenham would be a nightmare! So the question for you guys is, "What is the hardest ground to visit without a car"?
Mine would be Port Vale! But I live in Leicester!

Back to the game, I hope that Caddis is fit. Otherwise I think that we have enough strength in depth to cover any blips.

I've always found MK Dons a difficult place to get to via train, doesn't seem an easier way without going in a out of London with plenty of changes.
Cheltenham is another team that I have wanted to do well, I've played on the Whaddon pitch a few times in the past and have always got on well with people connected to their club. They have suprised me this season and have been expecting them to fall away from the top. I went up to the game at their place and we were pretty hard done by to come away with nothing, we controlled large parts of the game but couldn't score.
To be honest even a draw this weekend wouldn't be a disaster, it would keep them six points behind us and we still have that game in hand over them. Having said that getting a win would make it very difficult for the teams below us to close the gap. Looks like we will have to re shuffle the team now that Caddis looks like being out for a couple of games. Macca had a great game on Tuesday even when moved to right back, it actually allows him to get forward a bit more and he just loves running at the heart of the opponents defence. Should be a decent crowd and the lads should thrive on that.

Red, I remember going to away games on the train and then being marched to the ground with a police escort like PoWs! Think you might be right about Port Vale in terms of difficulty although I remember Southend being a challenge.

Notts, I agree that a point on Saturday wouldn't be a disaster...a win would be fantastic. They're a very good side and deserve to be where they are. I'd like to see them go up, though obviously behind us!

Who do you think will come in for Caddis? Should Nathan Thompson get a chance? I saw him at Tranmere last season and thought he did well until he tired after 70 mins or so.

Thoughts on Jonathan Tehoue - his scoring rate for Orient is 1 in 5, could be better, but he looks like a good physical presence and will be keen to make an impression as he's out of contract in the summer.

PS - does anyone look at The Washbag (www.thewashbag.com)? Check out their latest entry to their Hall of Shame!

Don, thanks for pointing out the article on Washbag, that was a fantastic read.
I lived in Swindon as a boy and had a job as a paperboy on Saturday evenings, just delivering the Pink, I think I only done it as I got a free couple of leftover copies. A few months ago there was a copy of the Pink for sale which covered the West Ham away FA cup game in 1975, this was my first ever away game and got this for a fiver, it was just as good as I remembered and is now safely tucked away with all my other Town stuff.

Notts,
MK Dons - another ground which I have not been to. But, I thought about it once & looked up a train route from Leicester. Then forgot about it.
But, I have thought of another one - Northampton! I would have gone there this season - Leicester is only 30 miles to the north, so I thought an easy trip. But when I explored the options.....! Getting to Northampton by rail involved going to Coventry first, changing trains etc. Then a bus to wherever they play now. Now where do you get that? Maybe Bus station! I could have handled the outward trip by getting up early, but wasn't confident about my journey home.

Don, great piece of work on your part then, had me laughing. Loved your comment about reading it all week, I was so sad I used to read all the local league results and study the tables. They even had a latest bit on the back page with any late results and late horse racing results.
As you said ' It was a work of art'.

Thanks Islington, I really appreciate that.

Don,
I read it too! Brought back a lot of memories for me! As lads in the 60s we lived in Chipp & had to catch the train to Swindon. We didn't have a lot of spare cash from our paper rounds.
But, a Saturday game finishing at a quarter to five, a walk to the station & the train back meant that we were just in time to pick up a copy of the Pink at the local newsagent. Sometimes we had to wait 5 minutes or so.
It still amazes me how they did it in the time it took us just to travel back from the game.
I know that the report on the 2nd half was a lot less than on the 1st, but even so.....
What I do remember, was that we all had to have our own copy. As I said, not much money, but even my bro. & me had to have one each.
Not counting me, I would say that there is a bit of class on this board. Pity that there are not more of us. Still, quality, not quantity......

Red - glad you liked the nostalgia!

I like this site, as you say quality is always better than quantity!
