Midfield duo Tom Cleverley and Anderson will be hoping to return from recent absences when Manchester United take on Athletic Bilbao in their Europa League last-16 first-leg clash at Old Trafford. Cleverley has been missing for a fortnight with an ankle injury that ended his hopes of an England debut against Holland, whilst Anderson has not started for four months after suffering a knee problem.
Paul Scholes is set to miss out after starring in Sunday's win over Tottenham and Chris Smalling could also be recalled after having stitches inserted into a head wound.
Sir Alex Ferguson (Man Utd): "It's a very difficult tie. All the work Bilbao have done has been very impressive. They're a very progressive team in Spain at the moment and it's going to be very difficult for us. We need to waken up, there's not question about that. Some of our European form has been disappointing. But it's an opportunity to progress and we want to take that opportunity, although it's going to need a very good performance."

Bilbao have a mini-defensive crisis due to the absence of key personnel. Centre-half Fernando Amorebieta is banned after his red card in the match against CSKA Moscow, while Aitor Ocio, Xabi Castillo and Iban Zubiaurre are all defenders and are all injured. Midfielder Ander Iturraspe returns to the squad after missing the 2-0 Basque derby win over Real Sociedad, allowing Javi Martinez to play in central defence.
Skipper Carlos Gurpegi is also out, as is veteran midfielder Igor Gabilondo. Athletic have no troubles up front though, with Fernando Llorente partnering Iker Muniain with support from Ander, Oscar de Marcos and Markel Susaeta.
Marcelo Bielsa (Athletic Bilbao): "My players will have the same desire, the same effervescence against Manchester United as they did in the derby against Real Sociedad. The decision on whether Iturraspe or Martinez play in central midfield is dependent on many factors. The former plays like Lucho Gonzalez does for Argentina; the latter has a huge physical presence and makes lots of challenges."

MU defence is Europe has been so open and shocking especially at OT. Benfica 2-2, Basel 3-3, Ajax 1-2 and now 2-3 against Bilbao. There were not lucky results. All games were dominated by the away teams.

Stretty, you're one of the biggest helmets on all of ja606. Typical glory hunter of a united fan. You slate our players you don't like, and overlook when your favorites play well. Your opinion doesn't matter an ounce to me and you should just keep it to yourself. Nobody cares what you think. At all sunshine.

SAF picking unbalanced teams in all other competitions except premier league is the reason.
Imagine if pep decided to play players out of position like pique in midfield or pedro in midfield etc. I think saf got to arrogant in other competitions this season.

people saying la liga is better, didn't blackburn beat us 3-2 at old trafford and they were bottom although blackburn only had 3 shots on target.
Bilbao deserved to win but were given a helping hand by the officials to achieve it. Hopefully like the defeat at home against ajax it doesn't cost us. Maybe the hair dryer treatment to some of our players that will make us play the united way get the ball especially out wide and batter teams. Non of this defensive non sense we played against ajax at home and bilbao at home.

Difference is that if we play Bilbao 10 times, they'll win 7.
If that match had gone on for 900 mins, Bilbao would have score more than us.

1 offside goal
1 from the worst FK ever given (despite terrible defending)
Real result: 2-1. How undeserved would that be!
---
No. I just checked the morning papers.
According to them the real result was 2-3.
I have to admit though that the ref took that free-kick really well and that the 4th official ghosting in at the far post to tuck it home was completely unexpected.
And can someone at UEFA please inform linesmen that the directive regarding not flagging an offside unless they're absolutely certain it's offside should not apply if it's United defending.
I imagine the ref must have been absolutely gutted to have to award United that injury time penalty.
P.S. Apparently Llorente let rip a massive fart in the players' tunnel that completely shook United's confidence - it's even rumoured that Giggs needed an oxygen mask. Intolerable gamesmanship, but UEFA won't investigate - oh no!
