Widnes Vikings 37-36 Wigan Warriors

WIGAN (18) 36
Tries: Russell 2, Hock, Hansen, Finch, Mellor Goals: Charnley 3
Possibly the shock result so far this season, and it doesn't matter Wigan intentionally played a weak team - no richards, Tommo or Leuluai. But still no excuse against a team in very poor form. Perhaps Wigan just didn't give them enough respect? I'm pretty sure they will on the return.
Nonetheless a great and well deserved win by Widnes. This might give them the confidence to string a few wins together and get their season moving

Some key players missing today for Wigan. No Tomkins, Leuluai, Richards or O'Loughlin.

Still 17 Vs 17 what ever the names say on the back of the jersey......great result for Widnes...
I've seen very few teams over the years that can go into a game not giving the opposition anything less then 100% and win, regardless of who they are.

I don't think you can use the excuse that certain key players were missing. All teams go have similar problems, and the big clubs seem to cope primarily because they have big enough squads to rotate.
Perhaps if Wigan was playing Wolves then fair enough, but we're talking Widnes here - the whipping boys of the SL. Until now that is

If Wigan had those players playing today they would have won, no doubt about it. They had some young players with little SL experience playing in key positions. Putting four new faces into a settled line-up can throw it off track a little and that's what happened yesterday. Fair play to Widnes though they must have fought tremendously hard.
