Downing has always, in my opinion, been a rather average football. He's been average for country, and he's been average for club. I thought it was mad when Liverpool paid 20 million for him, when NZogbia who had the better season and was cheaper, was available.

He should probably have more assists if not for inept finishing by others but that wouldn't change how poor a season he's had. Joe cole too was a disaster playing in the same position and even he managed 2 goals and an assist in the league, and he was free.

The truth is he'd be laughed at at any of the big name clubs, simply cause he isn't good enough for any of them, and the fact that Liverpool paid a lot of money for him only elevated his poorness.

The midfield and forwards all need to improve next season but the newer signings need to be given time still. If Van Persie was playing for Liverpool this season he would probably only have 10 goals and 20 shots hitting the goal frame such has been Liverpool's luck. Small margins can have a huge affect in football and life.

The problem is, we aren't one of the big named clubs. Our rivals now not Utd, City, Arsenal or Spurs. They are Newcastle, Sunderland, Everton, Fulham, Swansea, Norwich & Stoke - these are the clubs we are closer to than the illustrious 4th place!! We are 10pts from 4th; & 9pts from 16th. The sooner we get our heads out of our rectums and realise what a monumental mountian we have to climb, the sooner we can get on climbing it; rather that dawdling along, whistling a merry tune with our head in the clouds simply not worrying because we are still a big club.

You just need to look into Liverpool last match against Everton just to feel sorry for Downing. He sent a perfect curling cross to Kelly who just needed to touch t the ball to score. He missed a sitter. Downing fed many good crosses but wasted his by teammates.

He is better than Nzogbia who can’t even start for a team like Villa.

Arsenal did bid for Downing but he wanted to join Liverpool instead to be with his English mates and on an advice from his father who is a Liverpool fan instead of learning French

Cole has 8 goals 4 assists in 34 apps for lille according to stats.

That would be fine, but can you really compare the French top flight league with the English?

Just sayin thats the stats so far for the two players.

stats never won you a game, nor do they always tell the real story.....qualitative facts will always be more analytical. You can have 60% possession and still lose a game 3-0 !!!

Never said they did,just sayin thats the low down so far this season for the 2 players!
