That will kill off all gaming only stores within a year
If they did this they'd be shooting themself in the foot. A lot of gaming series where I have bought a sequel, I bought a pre-paid game first to test it out. They're dumb
What winds me up is all these game publishers whinging about how they don't see any of the profits from used game sales. So what?
If I choose to sell my car on, ford won't see any of the profits either.
With me, I generally buy used games for my xbox for games I wouldn't have considered previously. I bought fifa 08 pre-owned for example, and since then have bought every iteration brand new.
All this will do is prevent me from ever playing these games in the first place.
I see what you're saying but both using a car and FIFA is way off. It hurts smaller companies who take risks because they can. They don't have larger corporations breathing down their neck to put out a crowd pleaser ie. EA.
EA hardly feels the dent from you buying their game used but lets say A small company releases a well made, entertaining game and it's overlooked by a wave of new versions of FIFA/Call of Duty/Halo games. It may be a sleeper hit amongst consumers who give it a whirl as a used game but the company are seeing nothing of that. They see a failed game. Something the public did not want. How can there ever be another game? Why would anybody put up the money to produce it?
Cars are a necessity. Nobody NEEDS a game.
It's the same thing with musicians/artists. The people coming up having more than half their listeners downloading their music for free only let's the record label or the band itself that it's not profitable. Hence the crap blaring over the radio nowadays. Bigger corporations are releasing by the numbers, very inoffensive music that offends my ears.
I understand you're paying for your game but you aren't helping the industry that we've all come to love one bit.
in the new xbox has them will attract a lot of customers.

My works network is very limited, so i can't get on games sites, but a quick google news search of "ps4 used games" threw up this headline
"PS4 May Join Xbox Successor in Restricting Used Games - The PlayStation 4 is widely believed to be between one-and-a-half and two-and- a-half years away, meaning it may still be more than a year ..."
which seems to be implying that this is being talked about on both platforms.
Not long ago there were a lot of rumours that neither console would even have an optical drive of any sort - though sony quickly quashed that rumour, I haven't personally seen anything about the xbox rumours.

Agreed, but perhaps the solution is, lower budget games need to be released on a slightly cheaper price than the blockbusters like fifa?
£40+ prices me out of buying as many new games as I'd like, so there are some games I'd quite like to try but without pre-owned prices I never would. For example, I have heard loads of great things about Skyrim and would like to give it a go, however I'd been waiting for Arkham city for years, so bought that instead. After that I lined up SSX. Now I've bought that I've already identified Max Payne 3 as my next purchase, and when I've finished with that there will no doubt be another game on the horison, meaning I'll only be able to afford to play Skyrim at a cheaper price.
Alternatively if it never reduced, I'd never buy it, and would probably never buy any of the sequels either.
Hopefully if they do press ahead with the idea of blocking used games they'll expand the platinum series, meaning you can buy the older games new but cheaper - and downloadable.
I bought Binary Domain coz when it first came out it was only £30. Is a really good game but wouldn’t have bothered if it was £40, a tenner can make a lot of difference. If all games were cheaper when they come out they wouldn’t have to worry about losing so much money to second hand stores. They’re way overpriced considering how quickly you can finish most of them.
Without the used game market there is no way I could afford to carry on my gaming habit.
Without used games there are a vast amount of titles I would never have played because I simply can't afford to buy all my games brand new. At present, if I am unable to afford the game at release I have the option to wait a few weeks and then see if I can pick it up second hand at a good price. Without that option, I'll most likely never buy the game.
One thing I think games developers and publishers have overlooked though is that in this generation they do still make money on used games via the dlc. A lot of the games I've bought second hand, such as mw2 and assassins creed brotherhood, I've gone on to purchase the dlc. I don't think I'm unique in that, so with no used games market I suspect its possible developers will find themselves making LESS money on their games.
People have jumped at the big headline "PS3 blocks used games!". However if you read through a little more a lot says although not confirmed the idea is to limit used games and punters will need to buy a pass to allow access to all the parts of the game.
Some of the concepts mentioned to me seem totally flawed
The idea of buying a 2nd hand game from someone through psn then having game play ristrictions defeats the purpose of buying the game
Sony sort it out
GAME are going bust so it'll be harder to buy second-hand games anyway, no?
Theres multiple outlets other than GAME where second hand games can be bought. I wont be losing any sleep over them goin down Besides ive always preferred game station.
TFB, Gamestation is part of Game group so if Game go under so do they.
Secondly, Game going under is bad for the industry as it is one of the few places smaller developers can get their games into a high street store.
Most games are now bought online but sites like Amazon and Play only promote the major titles, so in turn these will generally be the only titles found in stores like CEX, so the industry becomes less competitive.
Anyway, from what I understand Game are close to a deal to get them out of administration.
It may be a sleeper hit amongst consumers who give it a whirl as a used game but the company are seeing nothing of that. They see a failed game.
=====================================
The very fact that the game is in stores anyway means that the company sold the game to the independent gaming stores. A couple hundred people buying the game used wouldn't give them any more money than a couple hundred buying the game brand new from the same store.
Initially of course. There are always additional orders. Stores only order what they feel they can sell. So if a title does well then certainly the gaming company will feel the increase in sales/orders
But we're talking a few hundred which is likely to be the number a game by a small company will make to start with. If the game turns out to be a hit, word will spread and more orders will obviously be put in because there are only so many pre-owned games.
