Squad for next season

I agree with pretty much all of this assessment, Trish. I do feel a bit for Gallagher though; while he hasn't shown great form this season, I'm concerned about certain things that have happened between the fans and him this year, such as Hayley Gallagher getting abuse on Twitter. This is absolutely not on and I couldn't blame him if it soured his view of us as a result, small minority or otherwise. If he does stay, the relationship has to start afresh.

One I can think of that you missed is Waghorn. I'd rather he stayed than Vassell, personally; and I do believe we need a replacement for Steve Howard. But we'll see.

I agree about the abuse gally has recieved is out of order and the people who do it should be ashamed, but I was only talking from a footballing point of view and I just can't accomadate him in the team when he only produces once every ten games or so!
Yes I forgot waghorn, I think there is space for him
And Vassel in the squad but yes I agree I would prefer him over Vassel if it came down to one or te other!
Any ideas for a replacement for Howard? Kevin Davies maybe?

I'd rather see us go for someone less known. When we get a signing come here with a reputation, they often don't live up to that. I'd rather see who Steve Walsh snr. can discover - someone young , less known and not necessarily from this country.

A good assessment and I generally agree with your conclusions Trish. My slight worry is ensuring that we have enough quality in the squad.

Peltier, for me, is one for the future. Definitely one to keep around the squad, but I’d like him to fight for his place against someone with better quality in the final third or more discipline in defence.
Wellens I’d keep until we find someone better, but we definitely need someone better and his energy is lacking for a player who’s not really that old.
King will be a big player if he can get the form back of last season. If he carries on like this season he’s a passenger. I wouldn’t like to rely on him.
Danns makes up for his lack of quality with his enthusiasm and energy. I’m not convinced he’s good enough, but if he keeps his end of season form he has a chance to make an impression next term.

I’d really like a new target man to give us an alternative to Beckford and Nugent. I always get the feeling that it’s desperation these days when we throw Howard on rather than a genuine opportunity to win the game.

four strikers Nugent and Beckford with Schlupp and Hooper or another old fashioned hit man to hold the ball up.

Gally he's gone as far as his ability will take him the same with Dyer the rest can stay with Danns Marshall drinkwater and king the best midfield in the championship

Av It !!!!

I agree with you joby, but I think king has had some unfair criticism this season, for the most part he was played out on position and then when he was about to get the chance to e got injured, I think he will be back to his best. Quality is the main aim for signings in the summer, I just struggle to see who we will be able to get??
I still would like Stewart from hull!

If that lot are all worth keeping Trish, why have we had such a poor season? On paper a strong squad but they have not delivered. Pearson had a weaker squad last time but they did better. So what is themissing ingredient?

Iv not said they are all worth keeping longtime, and a few of the ones that I have said we should keep I said as squad players rather than starters. The missing ingredient in my eyes is a couple more players and a full pre season

Young, not known and not necessarily from this country.

On reflection, I withdraw my statement.

Posted this on another thread but would fit perfectly in here:

To be honest, I think the worst thing we could do would be to have a complete overhaul of the squad again. Considering our biggest problem, arguably since Nigel left, has been consistency so do we want to go changing it all again? I do feel we have a core of a decent squad. I would say that a few shrewd additions and the sales of those who don't want to be here would be ideal on the transfer front. The main thing though is better team spirit and unity which Nigel will always develop.

Schmeichel (C)
Logan
Smith

Peltier
NEW RB
Morgan
Bamba
St Ledger
Parkes/Bolger/NEW YOUNG CB (prepared to bide his time and learn from the other three)
Konchesky
Kennedy

Drinkwater
Danns
King
Wellens (still a useful squad player)
NEW CM (not sure if this is vital though - the other 4 look good but we've struggled here all season)
Marshall
Dyer
Gallagher (if he can re-discover his form)/NEW WINGER
NEW WINGER

Nugent
Beckford (if he and Nigel make it up)/NEW STRIKER
Waghorn
Schlupp
Howard/NEW TARGET MAN STRIKER (preferably experienced)

2-3 quality additions are needed for me.

A genuine replacement for Wellens that will compliment Danns/Drinkwater.

A tall mobile striker to replace Howard.

A winger or attacking full back to release Dyer of his duties. Potentially one that can play right and left.

That would do it for me if we keep our key players.

The only players I'd be gutted to see leave are:

Schmeichel
Nugent
Marshall
Drinkwater (for his potential)
and ensure we keep 2 of the 4 centrebacks.

All the rest are replaceable in my humble view.

longtime - Simply, they haven't gelled as a team. You can have the best players in the world but if they don't knit together as a unit you have no chance. I believe that, given a pre-season, Nigel will be able to do this with our squad.

On a separate note, it might not be easy to just discard certain players. John Pantsil and Wellens are contracted until 2014 (not sure why we gave two 30+'s such long deals) and Mills and Gally until 2015. I think Pantsil will probably move abroad. Wellens will stay if he is prepared to play a similar role to that Oakley did the last couple of years and I think he will. Gally will stay because again I think he and Nigel are happy to have him as part of a squad rather than a first team nailed on starter. There will certainly be interest from other Championship sides for Mills. We'll definitely have to cut our losses in terms of a transfer fee but how many can afford his wages? West Ham if they stay down would be my only guess. I can see him maybe going out on loan with us paying a proportion of his wages.

2 or 3 additions i'd like to see come in our.
Cameron Stewart (Hull winger) Good attacking winger with pace & decent crosser of the ball.
Robert Koran (Hull Midfielder) For me Creative attacking midfielder.
Ricardo Fuller. Not the youngest but think he could still do a job in the championship (not much of a looking at Stoke).
