Many can lay claim to the crown: Edwards, Charlton, Law, Best, Robson, Cantona, Schmeichel, Keane, Scholes, Beckham, Giggs, Nistelrooy, Van Der Sar, Ronaldo, Rooney, Bebe and many more.

I kept writing the list and thinking 'well, if he's included, he must be too!'

So Duncan Edwards was before your time and even Cantona was a little before your time but you pick George Best?

Based off the footage I've seen and largely hearsay from older football fans, yes. If I simply did it out of my living memory I'd be missing more than 100 years of our history.

I dont see how anyone can make this judgement, since there is no one alive who has seen every United player. Video clips are not enough for me.

The best i've seen is Scholes.

Best player I have ever seen, period, George Best.

Nearest to him is Messi. Messi will likely go onto surpass George though.

Vidicschin - did you ever see Duncan Edwards?

I've heard you've been watching United for a lot longer than me.

No offence intended, I just assumed as you'd seen Best you might have seen Edwards.

................

Sadly, no. My dad however, once played against him in a friendly back in his youth.

He still talks about how good he was.

My grandad used to tell me Best was the best, ever, period. Every Sunday whilst the football was on tv he'd tell me the same, that nobody will ever compare.

It's difficult to say who is the best ever, because of the different time periods, facilities, conditions and cultures of the times.

But on youtube videos alone, his dribbling looked as good as Messi, during a time when defenders actively tried to hurt you, the pitches were like Sunday league, plus the boots and balls were heavier than a weeks shopping.

I have huge respect for Charlton, but for me, Best.

Just imagine if Best was bruoght up in today's environment, no cigs, no booze, he'd be something else.

and the game is now a non-contact sport in comparison to the 'treatment' he used to have to put up with from defenders.

So very true.

It would be intresting to see if Messi could take any of the rough treatment.

Back in the day, both the Spanish and Italian defenders were far more cynical than ours, and we had chopper Harris, Norman bite your legs Hunter and Tommy Smith.

VC, some of the things he did are just unreal. That chip over 3 or 4 defenders, almost in slow motion into the top corner was amazing.

My grandad always told me he did these sorts of things on a weekly basis, but due to the lack of footage they'd never be seen by the wider audience. I wish I could have been around for the Best-Law-Charlton era.

It is hard to look past Ronaldo but Cantona was my absolute idol growing up, our midfield of the late 90's was pretty hot as well, all of it (the starting XI)

Think on ability I will go with Ronaldo I haven't really seen enough of United players pre-90's to judge them fairly...

It was against Spurs. Match of the Day showed it in slow motion (it was new then) and it looked like one of the fans behind the goal had the ball on the end of a fishing rod and was reeling it in.

Can't forget the goal vs Benfica (I think), when 2 players tried to break his legs and he still managed to stay on his feet and finish it.

Just imagine a player taking that sort of tackle today, both would be sendings off and the player involved wouldn't be playing for a month.

Part of the hallmark of a great dribbled is the ability to stay on your feet when someone swipes at your legs. Best used to do it all the time, as did Maradona, and I've seen Messi do it. Whenever I see Messi go down, the tackle is almost at his hips!

The key isn't so much strength and toughness in those situations as balance.

Balance and agility are what make a good dribbler. Hence why so many of the worlds 'technical' players are short these days, low centre of gravity.

Ryan Giggs for me. I know Best was more skillful, i know Edwards life was taken from him much much too soon and i know Charlton scored a shed load of goals but too play for a club like United, to the level he has for 20 years and to adapt his game as he has is amazing.
