One of the main reasons is that R/L in Australia is the No 1 sport ,which means that far more money goes into the NRL from the Tv companies.
In the UK we have to compete with football and Union,both who have a tremendous amount of cash from TV and rich owners. Also youngsters these days dont seem interested in running about on a muddy field after school like we used to do, they are more interested in their computer games etc.
Back in the 50s and 60s RL in the UK was mainly for working men played mostly in Lancs and Yorks with 2/3 teams in Cumbria.
The players who took part on a semi pro basis then where miners ,engineering workers,farmers and labourers etc and they played to earn a little bit of extra money.
What do we have now,no industry to talk of in these areas,these are the areas where hard men where made by hard work and what we have now is more and more people sat in front of a computer screen.
Also with the influx of players from Union drying up the excitement of new players (especially from the Welsh Valleys) coming into the game has gone.
What the answer is I dont know,but in its present format with no promotion or relegation and this obsession with expansion without giving any thought to problems closer to home, the game is stagnating.

points.What impresses me about Nrl is the standard
the game is played, and the speed and physicality of
all the teams,I think the game is to be played in the
Perth area so that will involve longer distances,but
i suppose its only a few hrs flying time. It looks as
if the Aussies are going to be top dogs in R/L for
the forseeable future.
last season it would have taken a brave man to bet on Leeds to win the Grand Final nobody expected that,everyone keeps tipping Warrington to win things Joe but they fell away last season,its not always the so called big 3 who win everything look a St Helens dodgy start this season nobody would have predicted that either,going back a few short seasons Wigan faced the real threat of relegation,every season in Super League is different Joe its not as predictable as you may think.
forgot to add don't give up on Super League there's going to be a few more twists and turns this season like there will be in the NRL.

I agree with what you are saying regarding a few more twists and turns this season.
The problem is the twists and turns are being performed by inferior players to what they used to be.
These days anyone with any athletic ability is drawn to sports with a lot more money available.
Years ago soccer was'nt all that well paid,Union was still amateur apart from a few brown envelopes for the elite and this meant that RL had a chance of getting young players with ability and ambition into league.
Not any more ,coupled with the ineptitude from the people that run UK RL means that I cant see things changing.
Union in this country is struggling financially Eastmond & Tomkins could be the last ones poached from League for a while

Sam Burgess is 23, Sam Tompkins 22 – probably the most exciting forward and back in the entire game? Or not far off
Both English and young – have a go through your team and see how many homegrown youngsters you have, Charnley, Logan Tompkins, Tuson etc....
Gold Coast Titans are on a sticky wicket I believe? A few other SL teams are in trouble too, especially those without a sugar daddy....

But I can't agree with Joes opening remarks on the NRL being outstanding.
There have been some close scores which keeps it interesting but the quality of football has dropped in the last couple of years because we have got to many teams with not enough 1st grade talent to fill them.
Nearly every team has got 1-2 players in the top grade that wouldn't of made it a couple of years ago and once any team gets a few injuries it is all the more clearer to see how we lack the number of quality players to fill 16 teams.
This is going to be further shown when the NRL decide to expand to 18 teams but unfortunately money takes over from commen sense when these decisions are made because the t.v broadcasters (who run the show) want expansion far and wide for their advertising pull power.
It's not all doom and gloom because every year with these younger lads getting the opportunity there is always a couple that come through with flying colours and are exciting to watch.
With the huge amount of money spent at the top level I feel in order to fix the above problem we should be forcing the clubs to show more attention on development along with looking after our country local teams that still run off chook raffles which is a joke considering 40% of the NRL players are from the bush.
As for our clubs being rich......yes some are, but only about 3-4 make a profit whilst 9 or 10 struggle to brake even with 2-3 feeling the heat and on the verge of collapse if it wasn't for the NRL propping them up.
Sorry to drag this on but I'm passionate about our great game of rugby league and very concerned in which way it is heading....

In answer to your comment above I will answer by asking you to look at what Souths is saying. He is saying that the standards in the NRL are dropping due to the lack of really top notch players.
So if it is happening in the NRL it confirms what is happening in the RL only more so.
The players you named in your post (apart from 2 and at the outside 3) would not get near the first teams of most clubs of a few years ago.
its the nature of sport in general a poor Man Utd team have but won the Premier League perhaps sport as a whole is on its death bed
