It's why some unis don't accept gap year students for maths.

A bus leaves the bus station every 12 minutes. The first bus leaves at 6.00 am. How many buses are there per hour?

Is the answer 5 or 6?

A hesitant 5

5

the sixth one would be at 7am but you're starting the cycle from the start of the hour so that one counts towards the next hourly cycle.

But if you think of instantaneous intervals of time, within an hour there will have been 6 buses.

1st bus: 6:00
2nd bus: 6:12
3rd bus: 6:24
4th bus : 6: 36
5th bus: 6:48
6th bus: 7:00

So within an hour that's 6 buses.

I'm sure the answer you're meant to give is 5 but the question is very badly worded if you've studied mechanics.

No it's exactly 60 minutes. The first bus leaves at exactly 6:00 and the 6th bus leaves at exactly 7:00.

In the question they just say 6:00 and every 12 minutes.

For most job applications I fall at the first hurdle, when you're meant to answer scenario questions as somehow I always choose to do the wrong thing.

I would answer 6 to that question (if it was in like a riddle quiz)

On a shelf in a store there are five different items on it. The book is on the right of the mug and the pen is on the right of the book. The magazine is on the left of the mug and the bottle is on the left of the pen. Which item is in the middle?

Please tell me there are 3 possible answers and I haven't turned into a total idiot.

I'm assuming they mean not next to the object. So on the right of something means there's still possibly something between those 2 objects

CSTP yes.

From what I can see the answer could be mug, book or bottle.
