All quiet on the red side...

United have so far spent over £50m since the end of the season. Hardly call United's business quiet!

Just how much money do you think there is to spend, anyway?

This.

I agree about the defensive cover in midfield, but look at Diarra, failed at Arsenal, Chelsea and Real. The only club who he did anything at was Pompey, and it isn't exactly hard to look good in a club with players they had at the time.

I dont care what anyone says we need defensive midfield cover as well as attacking

........................

No we do not need defensive midfield cover.

And, for the love of god, as RB&W says, we have just spent 50M, so we have hardly been quiet in the transfer window.

Bear in mind, SAF has not said the spending is done yet, like he has done in previous seasons.

SAF isn't going to tinker too much with a team that ended up 1st in England and second in Europe.

Reports still claim we are playing a waiting game for Sanchez although I don't really get why we would be in for another winger

DM is covered now Fletch is back fit, Carricks back in some sort of form and even Jones could do a job there as a backup if required

People sat we need a new playmaker. Possible but SAF has stated this will be Anderson's breakout season so I find it hard to believe he would bring someone in that would leap ahead of him. We should see what Anderson can do now he's finally fit and finally given a run in the team. Should Anderson get injured though, w would have a problem there. Giggs legs are in their final year and his head will be in the clouds for a while and he's gonna be getting stick from opposition fans wherever he goes.

For me, that only means promoting youth or we need to buy someone who is going to leap ahead of Anderson, which I don't see as the plan for this season. Maybe next depnding on whether Anderson starts to pay back some of that transfer fee.

If we did buy a Sneijder for example, I can see Anderson wanting to leavre tbh. He's been patient playing second fiddle to Scholes when he has been fit.

I meant lately, fergie 'normally' gets his business done early and thats it! berba the only exception I can think of in recent years.
Yeah spent £50 mil so far ..... we still need to add and nobody can deny that!
Perhaps Diarra was the wrong choice but only DM i know that we have been linked with this TW.
As for UTDREDMACCA did you watch the champs league final? we were completely outplayed for massive parts of the game! we need to be better than Barca we need creativity! Carrick is hanging on now shouldve been sold last year yeah played a few good games last season but no where near the player he shouldve been for 18 mil! jones isnt gonna get much of a chance unless like u said injuries happen.
Can anybody realistically see Sanchez coming to us? I cant

Sanchez is a winger. Why would we need another

Barca battered us yes, but the score was 3-1, not 7-0

That scoreline was kept respectable because of the defense, which carrick protects. He also covered more ground than anyone else

Barca would have battered anyone that day, they really whenre that good. They made a quality winger like Valencia look like non League and Giggs may as well been asleep behhind our goal.

That Barca side are going to rule for awhile and SAF is probably thinking slightly more long term, which his latest signing suggest.

We'll be better next season but we won't be as good as Barca again. No one will

Without wanting to exaggerate our shortcomings (after all, last season was ultimately a success story), I agree with the OP that we need a high-class passer in our midfield.

First, let's consider the players leaving:
- Scholes (limited appearances but the most talented midfielder in the squad)
- Gibson (a fringe player but one who got quite a lot of game time last season)
- Hargreaves (OK, he hasn't really been a regular United player since 2008, but he hasn't been replaced and now is at last off the wage bill)

We should also consider that Giggs - often our main supplier of creativity in midfield - could well be in his last season and is already an 'every other game' player.

Anderson, Fletcher and Carrick are good players with a good mixture of attributes and I don't want to suggest they aren't good enough to play for this United side. But I do think that these three + Giggs leaves us rather short of numbers and a little short of star quality.

This is not simply a knee-jerk reaction to being taught a footballing lesson by Barcelona. How many times during the last domestic season did United fail to convince and either scrape out a possibly undeserved win or draw against a team we should have been able to beat? In a season where none of our title rivals were convincing, we didn't exactly run away with the league. Similarly, the previous season Arsenal and Chelsea were both below par and United had a great chance of winning four on the trot but overall our squad wasn't quite good enough. In fact, even in the 2008-9 season (successful as it was and with Ronaldo still in the team) I felt we were lacking a bit of class in midfield and not quite as strong as the 2007-8 side.

I think these shortcomings have quite a lot to do with the decline in appearances and performance levels of Scholes. He was sublime in 2006-7 and great in 2007-8.

I'd be delighted if Anderson fulfilled his potential this year or if one of the youngsters (Cleverly? Pogba?) could break through and prove himself as a top class performer. In the absence of certainty about these prospects, I'd be very happy to see us signing Modric.

Having said all that, it seems a bit early to conclude that things are 'all quiet' this early in the window and following three signings.

According to the United Gossip column we have missed out on - Jan Vertonghen – a central defender/defensive midfielder.

So do we think that this rumour is rubbish or does it appear Fergie does still want to add a defensive mid like Varane to the squad?

According to the United Gossip column

That is exactly what that is. Gossip from generally unreliable sources
They have that ticker on there adding them up as it goes along. It's clearly a Pi55 take out of the media for me

apart from the fact that we have been far from quite.... we might be looking to sell off a few players to gain that extra bit of cash (plus reduce wages and make room in the squad) to bring in another signing.

O'Shea, Brown, Gibson and Obertan all look set to be moved on... this could bring in £10m or so and take £150k +/- a week off the books.

Completely agree Red Russian!!!
What not only United fans want but football fans want is some hard concrete evidence (fergie) stating were in for this player or that player and bids being made... genuine activity not this paper bull that even my 3 week old son could come up with better! We NEED a big name signing and i for one hope its sneijder, dont rate modric that much and there are still plenty of other players of better quality than him also

If you actually thought this through, you would realize what an idiot you sound.

Was thinking the same

I don't see how announcing our targets to the world would benefit the club at all

I prefer Modric, not necessarily because he's a better player but because I think he fits the Scholes-shaped hole in our squad better. I may be wrong, but the things that have impressed me about Sneijder have been the things he has done in the last third of the field. I have no doubt he is one of the best attacking midfielders / number 10s in the world at the moment. But we don't have much space for that kind of player if we intend to play attacking wide forwards (cf. recruitment of Young in addition to Nani and Valencia) and were at our most effective last season with Rooney operating behind Hernandez.

Maybe Sneijder can work well further back but I don't think we'd see the best of him there. Meanwhile, we don't always succeed in controlling midfield with neat passing and comfortable possession. Modric is a master at that game and very good at feeding the wings / forwards.

--------------------------------------------
Pathetic.... would you prefer Hernandez or Torres as our striker next year? Only one of those was a "big name signing", last season.

We have already made a marque signing in De Gea... 2nd most expensive keeper in history... but I guess, as he is not an attacking player, that doesn't count, right?

Lets look at this logically and I will use some of your statings to assist my point.
United are one of the most prestigious clubs in world football most would agree.
along with barca, real, inter etc.
Why would any player want to go to either barca or real right now??? they wont get a bloomin game! no matter how much money either through at them therefore putting united in a better position.
with the likes of inter, ac milan, juve .... they havent got the sort of money the figures for some of these stars have been reported!
why oh why any player would want to play for citeh?>> unless its money.
arsenal wont ever spend any money -nothing to worry about there leaving chelsea as the only realistic threat to any transfer target.
and before anybody starts going on about villareal, valencia, roma, etcetc we are MANCHESTER UNITED not some 3rd rate team¬!!!!!

I wonder whether Sir Alex is going to unearth a new gem to understudy for Anderson. That seems more realistic as I cant see someone coming in ahead of Anderson now he is finally healthy. We paid a bomb for him as a teenager

Mind you, if we signed Modric I wouldn't complain.

i see your point just personally dont rate him especially at £22 MIL never mind anymore than that. just think we need some 'ronaldoesque' factor back in the team the flair and skill!

'dont rate him especially at £22 MIL'

Given the prices attached to the likes of Henderson and Jones, I tend to agree with the Spurs management that £22m is well below market rate for Modric.

--------------------------
Three of the hottest potential transfers of the Summer could be Fabregas Sanchez and Tevez

Two of them want to go to Barca and the third wants out of the UK

We seemingly have not bid for Sneijder, He appears to want to stay at Inter anyway and at 27, he may be a tad old for us to pay a bomb for now

Modric is not possible in my opinion as I doubt United/Spurs valuations are going to be close anyway. And Levy has said categorically that they will not sell him for any amount anyway

Nasri is the only plausable one and if he wants stupid money, then City will land him in my opinion
