Dev - I agree that we won't find it easy in our current position to attract the star players but I think you may be overlooking one of the biggest factors in who a player signs for and that is wages.
We are not in the top league for wages paid (thank god)but we better than most.
I am simply giving you the benefit of my experience as a Spurs fan.
When we sat mid table, it's difficult to attract the sort of player who will really make a difference. It's not like you're banging on the door of 4th, you're nowhere near it. There is no guarantee that you'll be any closer to it next season. This fact alone will rule our buying many top players.
Arsenal singed Gervinhio and Mertesacker last season, hardly great signings!!
Not that convinved Podolski will be much better. The M Villa link is the same as we are being linked with Elm, Ramirez and Du Jong. Its just paper talk until its done.
5 times.....indeed, wages talk. I do question whether your owners will want to pump the wage bill too much, although you did off load a lot of wasted wages last summer.
£80k a week = £4m pa. 4 or 5 players of that ilk and your wages bill is through the roof, not to mention your transfer spending. Your new owners seem positive but not carefree.
Rubbish!
Carroll is going nowhere in place for a 28/29 year old.
If that ever happens my season ticket is getting binned
Things are bad but i hope not that bad!
Per Mertesackr has been a great signing
Dont listen to the media all they go on about is his lack of pace. Like Koscielny I dont think he will ever get praise/recognition. Hes a better defender than Vermaelen
If you watch play he rarely gets done for pace. Hes a class player and hes always in the right position
Gervinho has been better than Downing and Bellamy and this is his first season in English football
Dev - I wouldn't want the club to go beyond it's means and not being in the CL has hit us financially but I do think that we could attract payers of enough quality to challenge for top four because we can afford reasonable . Newcastle and your team seem to have managed it.
Yann M'villa is done
Podolski and M'Villa = £28M
Downing and Adam =£28M
Its not just Arsenal other teams like Spurs, Newcastle will be stronger
Will be even harder for Liverpool to break in
John (U3530)
Have you any links to M'Villa being done, would be very impressed and gutted if this was true, have been saying we should sign him for a long time, great player.
John (U3530)
Do you also have links to prove this
'Gervinho has been better than Downing and Bellamy and this is his first season in English football'
as i would argue he has been as bad as Downing and Bellers has been much more effective...
Yann M'villa is done - deals are never done until they are done. Will RVP still be there, Spurs will likely loose Ade, will Newcastle still have Cisse and Ba will Liverpool still have Suarez?
The point I am making is no-one knows yet and while I don't think that we will make stellar signings I do think we will bring in two or three that will improve us. Sure City, Chelsea and United will improve their squads but with the rest it's all a bit unknown.
I really don't see Spurs making any big signings unless they lose one of their stars, Arsenal may make a couple of signings but nothing major unless RVP leaves and Newcastle will look to pick up a couple of gems like they have done in the last couple of years.
Don't forget there is still the issue of CL to be sorted for next year. Two out of Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle won't get CL and so will have the same issues of attracting players to deal with as ourselves.
In my opinion Chelsea could cope without CL money as could Arsenal (but it will have an effect on them) Spurs and Newcastle are used to not having CL money so willl be affected less but it may hinder their ability to progress.
Why do people keep saying Yann M'Vila is done?
5 times.
You speak a lot of sense
When you look at the Spurs team, it has been built over time with players now reaching their peak.....Bale, Lennon, Kaboul, Huddelstone, Ekotto all purchased quite cheap some time ago. Others are nailed on experience & quality (Friedel, Parker, VDV, Adebayor) while Modric is our "big signing" at £16m. No one else cost more than £10m, and our wage structure is a lot tighter than Liverpools.
We have some youth in Walker & Livermore whi have shown they are well capable in the EPL.
I think we have a good balance, but what is noticeable is that our team on the pitch usually totals about £45m - £55m in value. It's not an expensively compiled squad.
Much the same can be said for NUFC, some very astute signings, nothing more than £10m, and a manager who clearly knows how to organise and how to inspire.
The challenge for LFC is to identify the same sorts of players who are available for good value and will prove to be excellent purchases....your purchasing under KK so far has been a bit the other way round...top dollar signings, not living up to their price tag....this may be Comolli's fault.
It will be interesting to see who you target this summer
If Chelsea win the CL all opinions on Spurs are invalidated.
It'll be a bit nuts until the smoke settles on that one.
Julien Laurens a French Journalist has confirmed it arsenal have agreed a fee with Rennes for weeks but now the player has agreed terms deal will be announced in 2 weeks time (After French season finishes)
But there will be more coming in as a quite a few of our fringe players will be leaving freeing up wages/squad (25 man squad)
Dev - Don't forget David Bentley.
