Only change i would make would be to replace Onions with Bresnan. I think onions still has work to do on his fitness and according to a friend of mine who's a Durham fan they are still treating him carefully and not asking him to bowl long spells yet.
I also think Bresnan offers more with the ball in different types of conditions.
Other than that i agree, looks a good team to me

I would stick with Broad.. So no changes at all.Unless of injury ofcourse..

If we pick Broad then we are effectively playing 3 bowlers.Out of those 3 Swann is a spinner and I dont think the pitches are going to suit him and Indians play spin exceptionally well so I cant see him making too much of an impact. So we would be over reliant on Anderson and Tremlett who although good bowlers are hardly Ambrose or Mcgrath/

Know it All.
There is absolutely no way Broad should play.He shouldnt even be in the Lions team when it comes to f/c cricket.

Please play BROAD he might help india win the test series , indians dont normally like bowlers like onions or bresnan who are essentially line and length bowlers

My first choice was Bresnan. He was exceptional in the Ashes. But atm I think he needs more f/c cricket unbder his belt.He has looked rusty in this ODI series so far.He needs a few f/c games IMO.

Bresnan would get a chance at possible two First Class games before the Tests begin. There is one against Worcester coming up soonish and then another one, however i think that finishes a day or two before the 1st test starts. He might get some overs in but could be tight.

I would pick Broad he will rough a few batsmen up.. I know hes not bowled well of late..But i think he will come into form in the next two weeks.. I dont rate Bresnan but thats my personal opinion..

posted on 7/7/11

You're right Broad will rough up a few batsmen Know it all, but he won't get wickets doing that. if we feel we can trouble India's batting by roughing them up, we're in for a long long summer of chasing leather.

We need someone who will come on through the innings when nothing is happening and bowl short and get stuck in. Broad will do this..
It dont matter who bowls if the batting is on top thats cricket for you.. I just think we should stick with Broad for the Indian series..

Well to my mind this is the advantage of Bresnan, not only can he bowl line and length but he can also bowl short and get stuck in with the batsmen if that's needed. Broad right now, through choice or instruction, can only bowl short. I would imagine the indians are rubbing their hands together in joy at the thought of those short long hops outside the off stump that Broad seems to favour right now.

I might be reluctant to play bresnan because he hasnt had any 1st class cricket for a few months, having said that he's playing the odi's so I guess he's proved his fitness and performed very well in oz.

I was always a fan of Onions I might be tempted to bring him in to the squad depending on his fitness and how well he's bowling for Durham - didnt do to badly against Yorkshire tho.

I think against class opposition you cant really afford to carry a bowler in a 4 man attack, Broad could do with some 4 day cricket before the series if he continues to bowl rubbish then he'd be out for me.

Really I'd go with the same side as Sri Lanka but swap Bresnan for Broad

Ditto.

Doubt it'll happen though.

I would also stick with Broad

Mate - purely because I felt our selection policy years ago did us so much harm - that Ive almost gone the other way - he has been part of a successful team for a few years - Team Ethics served the Aussies well for years and we caught on - basically - he got injured in Oz - hes come back - had 1 average series (at best I suppose) and we are already putting him under pressure by screaming for his head - I understand form - and no-one is drop proof I know - but at least give him the summer to get back to his best - cos no matter what - he has done us proud in the past -

PS ask me again after the first test

Hmmmm. Indian boys haven't played the bounce all too well against the pace of the Windies, on some very bouncy pitches mind. Moot point really as there should be a big team change, but regardless of current form Broad does have one of the best short balls in the modern game.

I would stick with Broad in the hope they go after him, unless it looks particularly Swing friendly, then I'd consider a swap for Bres in hope of some first morning destruction. Big Onions fan but I don't think he's read yet.

he has been part of a successful team for a few years -

But he hasnt been succesful. The guy has an awful test record. So its not just about one bad series. He has been consistently poor and has stayed in the side only on the basis of a very few good performances here and there.
Eg:Oval 2009,Durban 2009,Edgbaston 2010.

I think pitches at Birmingham and Lords willl suit Broads bowling..
Anyway who ever England chose they wont do that bad of job..

posted on 7/7/11

Like everyone else 10 out of 11 pick themselves the only choice being the 3rd quickie.

As far as Broad is concerned I think it comes down to how the England coaches feel the way he should bowl, which is short and quick. I don't think this is his type of bowling. For me its line and length with the odd short one now and then to rough the batsman up. Perhaps Broad was doing this against Sri Lanka as they thought this was how to get them out, hopefully is was only temporally

posted on 7/7/11

The other thing I was going to mention was, I think Trott and possibly KP should bowl more often when a partnership is growing even if its to keep one end tight and/or to rest a fast bowler.

posted on 7/7/11

As i said please select broad and let india win , broad may try to sledge the great indian batsmen and will be able to register a few centuries with his bowling LOL
indias main threat would be anderson and to an extend tremlett . see off anderson with new ball then u ve won the game 30%

Thats a second string line up.The old men Dravid and Laxman who will be actually playing against us have played the short ball well. The fact that the likes of Vijay and Kohli have struggled against short pitched bowling is irrelevant in the context of this series coz they arent even in the squad.
They have SRT and Gambhir to come who play the short ball well.So i dont think short pitched bowling will trouble india in England. The pitches will be nowhere near as bouncy as the ones they encountered in the Caribbean this time around. Our best chance of bowling out India is through swing and seam movement rather than bounce. But most of them play swing and seam pretty well as well.So we might be in for a few long hard days in the field particularly if the pitches are anywhere near as flat as the ones we played on against Sri Lanka.

Know It all

His record at Lord's suggests otherwise.

posted on 7/7/11

The experiment of having three tall bowlers at Lords against SL was a complete flop. A good attack needs variety.
Anderson, Tremlett and Bresnan with Swann swept the Assies away in the last two games of the shes. They would be my choice.
If Broad plays for me he would replace Tremlett, but Tremlett's name is already on the team sheet along with those of Anderson and Swann.
