De Gea > Chesney

I think Chesney has made just as many if not more mistakes this season.

I think all level headed United (and football fans in general) realised he’d struggle to begin with. It was as much nerves as it was his ability or adapting to the PL.

He has pulled off some seriously good saves and kept us in games, of course the save from Mata’s free kick stands out, I don’t know if you can make a save any better.

What really standout for me is his distribution, his passing, kicking and decision making is up there with the best. It will be good to have a solid, confident keeper between the sticks from the off this season because there is no doubt the inexperience and naivety of our young defence + De Gea’s vulnerability cost us points.

i think the fact he hasnt been a topic of conversation for a while now amongst fans or in the media suggests he has settled.

The media had such an agenda with him at start of seaon, you could see them just waiting for any slightest mistake and bang they were all over it.

I've not seen any praise or anything in the media since De Gea has turned it around (perhaps thats not even the right phrase) as he wasn't even that bad he just made some mistakes and wasn't confident.

He's been fantastic ever since his nerves depleted a bit. He had struggled coming for crosses, getting down quickly and actually his distribution wasn't very good earlier in the season. He's always had the ability, but I put his poor games early on down to a lack of confidence coming into a new country with a new language and style of play (and the media jumped straight on him). Anyone who has played in goal knows that confidence affects that position greatly.

Credit to him. He's already very assured in goal despite his age and technically he's one of the best around. Hopefully he will continue to improve and be our no.1 for many years.

thats because the media will look for the bad before the good -it makes a better article in a papaer.

An errors where just him adapting - also constant changing of CB's didnt help. As soon as we had Rio and evans in for a long run there were no issues.

I was really pleased to see he got called up for Spain. They can obviously see the talent there. People in this country, specifically the media and Arsenal fans, are so quick to criticise him, but obviously the Spanish have a better attitude when it comes to football.

He's been very good this season. And what is even better is that he still has so much room for improvement.

Have an experienced defender that can communicate and organise the defence, in Vidic, will help join even more. He'll bulk up a bit more over the summer I imagine, and I'd assume his English is improving.

He's still not the finished article and people need to have patience. I know that's hard when you're a keeper for United, but I think the coaching stuff did their research and know how good he can become.

dunno

Saw her last night and to be frank, I probably wouldn't bother wasting time by asking her name

Darren - I agree with every word of that, but I genuinely can't see any spelling mistakes

It's actually hard to believe how many things were against De Gea early on in the season:
- replacing one of the best goalkeepers in world football, on the back of one of VDS's best seasons.
- leaving his friends, family and familiar environment.
- having to adapt to a new culture and language.
- having to adapt to a more physical style of football.
- joining one of the biggest clubs in the world.
- debut in front of 90,000 people (against Man City).
- unsettled back four in front of him.
- vulture-like media scrutinising his every move.
- he was only 20.
- coaches probably changing his style.

He was clearly going to struggle, and has done truly remarkably to get through all of that and be as good as he is now. Still a long way to go!

Macca!

Agree with all of that, Mynani. People just don't think logically about things sometimes. I didn't expect him to be great straight away (this is his critic's problem) for the reasons you've stated. He's actually suprised me how well he's played.

In a couple of years he'll be a top top keeper.

With Vidic in front of him next season, I expect De Gea to improve further.

It's no coincidence that De Gea's form was at his best as soon as Rio and Evans forged a decent CB partnership. Before that, we played every combination of CB, conceded a lot hence De Gea's confidence was so low.
