A Kid's first experience of watching Bolton every week should NOT be in the Premiership. Your little un is going to experience those magical promotion chases that we all remember. And that has to be a good thing.

Absolutely right Campo. One of my greatest memories of following the trotters is when Frank Worthington scored that goal against Blackburn to gain us promotion back n the late seventies. Then there were the heady days of the nineties and the early two thousands when we had the pain of losing a play off final to watford, winning one against Preston and of course that incredible final season at Burnden Park when we creamed the championship with NINETY EIGHT POINTS and ONE HUNDRED AND TWO GOALS scored.

There have been great times in the premiership too, such as the win at OT when Ricketts bagged the winner, the battles to avoid the drop with Jay Jay 'so good they named him twice' Okocha scoring that belter against West Ham and of course our two European Adventures with Lisbon and Munich being lifelong highlights but the truth is that was a long time ago now and for the last few seasons we ground out survival and little else.

In the Championship we're going to be seen as front runners and every game will be seen as one in which we have at least a good chance of getting a good resut. THC I think your son is going to love it and I think seeing us win and hearing the Reebok rocking to cheers when we do should be the perfect way to introduce the lad to the real Boton Wanderers.

LPP, you've summed it up perfectly for me old thing.

He's hopefully going to get to experience something other than the worrying about the balance sheet and watching us get steam-rolled.

And I get to see it with a fresh pair of eyes too. Can't wait!

My first match was a league cup tie vs Watford. We won (Tony Philliskirk grabbed a couple I think), and I was convinced for weeks that it was due to me. I didn't attend a match where we lost for over 2 years - well that's how it seemed anyway.

It wouldn't have felt the same if we were a struggling top flight side - (that said we were a top end if not quite enough for promotion Division 3 side instead)

I feel the same OP (though can't persuade my daughter to come to the footie!). I thought I'd be really depressed, but I'm looking forward to next season.

As I'm only 21, I have spent most of my Bolton supporting life in the Prem, but thanks to my family being Bolton mad through the generations I have a greater understanding of what the club is about. My first game was at Burnden in its last season against Charlton. I dont remember the match but I do remember a parachute squad landing on the pitch before KO and just thinking that it was incredible and that Bolton had this sort of thing every match! My first proper memory of a match and the match that really got me into football and the wanderers was my first away match at Barnsley in which we drew 2-2. I think the memory sticks with me because away days are that bit more special as its a different ground every time and you get a greater sense of being part of the club as a fan.

In those few seasons before the Prem I went to Stockport on a wet Tuesday night only to lose 4-3 with Ian Marshall scoring 2, Grimsby, Huddersfield, the semi v Villa and the Playoff v Watford. All great memories and something i looked forward to weeks in advance because we couldnt really afford season tickets. Then we hit the prem and my dad surprised me with my first, of many, season ticket and football took over my weekends and life.

Dont get me wrong, I loved the prem years, but the foundations of my Wanderers passion were laid in Division 1 (Old money, for me) and those exciting away days. So THC, if you can, I urge you and your lad to get to as many away days as you can because you are mixing with the real fans, no plastics and for me any way, no matter tha result, that was where I fell in love with Bolton Wanderers.

What a great positve thread. 5star from me. I hope that your son has a great season with plenty to cheer.

I think and hope that we will all enjoy the ride.

Top post THC. Ennui - top word.

Also, yours and your son's combined age is still younger than Mallorca Trotter's age. Just a bit of trivia.

I'm simply not going to bite to that!

My lad has had a season ticket fully for 2 years.. He's 7 in June.. I agree with the above, I'm looking forward to him hopefully seeing a more competitive league next year when we get a decent home record!!?

Certainly going to take him to a few away games too.. Ones where tickets are available and prices not stupid. That will make a nice change...

Ok ok I'm biting!!!!!!!

LargeHat I'm bloody 38!!!!!!!!! Aaaahhhhhhhh

I took my Granson to his first match when he was five, unfortunately his father isn't a Bolton supporter being from Teeside, poor devil.

Unfortunately I won't be going back to Blighty before Christmas, so he has a long wait before the next game.

Cheered me up no end reading this. Hopefully we’ll have a good season and he’ll be hooked forever.

I especially agree with GoldenGambler. Going to away games as a kid was what properly made me feel part of it. Not just the match either, the whole day, starting in either my dad’s local before getting in one of his mates vans, or sneaking in the back door of the King Bill with my older brother before getting on one of the official coaches, being allowed to have a half, as long as I didn’t tell my mum, and playing pool and talking about the match with blokes who (it seemed to me) had been going forever. Then getting to places like Mansfield, Barnsley and Burnley (we only need 9 men) and just having a really good day win or lose.

And, I’ve just realised I’ve got friends/family in Leeds, Leicester, Huddersfield and Sheffield which should make for a few good weekends. So, despite the fact I’ve had a whinge on and off here and undoubtedly will again, I am looking forward to the season and playing against some new and old rivals. As many have said on here, you can have issues with the way the club is run, the manger, the players...but, at the end of the day, it’s the club we all support and always will.

Dead right...

Popped out with the usual bunch of mates on Monday night (first time since relegation) and within half an hour had arranged away days at Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and a weekender in Blackpool.

All the 'Barclays' Premier League fans were chatting about RVP to City for £obscene, whilst we were discussing the best 'pubs' up the North End of Blackpool.

I honestly can't wait for August!

Ah the palliative power of getting dumped unceremoniously out of the Prem !!!

I too, am actually looking forward to the season starting again with renewed sense of enthusiasm that's been lacking for a few years.

And I received a phone call last night from a mate who I've not seen for about four years (since we all started drifting away from the Wanderers for well documented reasons) as he's drumming up support for some proper old-fashined away trips next season.

And I'm in !!

Weird isn't it? You think you want to eat at the top table but when that's no longer an option something else takes its place and when you think about it properly, it's probably more appealing anyway.

Roll on August.

Theres alot of potential for some cracking away days next season. Burnley, Blackburn, Blackpool, Leeds, Sheff Weds. Im going to try and get to Brighton as well as their ground is brilliant and should be a decent night out after. As i'll be back at uni in Nottingham i'll deffinately be at the City Ground and will probs be at more away games than home ones. I cant wait!

Not seen the word Ennui used to describe bolton before, but is probably the most accurate.

Love away games - best games ever!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to Brighton...

So there'll be two of us!

Don't be too hasty in planning Blackpool - they've got a playoff final to contend yet! Cheaper tickets, good atmospheres, old and charming grounds, real and knowledgeable fans... Next year could be fun.

THC - great uplifting article. Hopefully this coming season will result in your lad 'getting the bug' and another life-long wanderer will enter the ranks!

I honestly dont think iv been this excited for the start of the season since the Allardyce days. The anticipation of potential new signings, visiting new grounds, having new banter on here with 'real' fans and what our new kit will look like! Thanks THC for bringing back the memories of being a young Bolton fan on the first steps of a roller coaster of an adventure

It seems we all have a renewed sense of reality and enthusiasm for the club. Time for a 'thank you Owen' thread?

I'm going to restrict our away days to local derbies and maybe one or two over the border in Yorkshire but I definitely will get to a few with him. I've been buzzing about this all day and can't wait for the season to start. Going to buy him a shirt but will wait to get a name on it when he's picked a favourite player. Would love for him to find his own Wanderers hero in Sordell or Wylde :D

I feel relieved in a way. I fell out of love with the prem some time ago....its all about 4/5 clubs who have the money and the players...the rest just make up the numbers. Havent enjoyed a game since I dont know when. Next season will be a new challenge but an interesting one.I do not expect us to be whipping boys any more. To be honest we did well to hang around for 11 seasons with our resources. COYWM

Dutty Sutty, you stole my thoughts, I actually think and hope that Blackpool get promoted. I don't want to see Bolton's second team going up. We need to take some points off them next season.
