I think he'll do well, and he is no more of a risk than Martinez. In fact, I'd take AVB over Martinez any day. At least AVB has experience of the big time.
To be honest, the only people I really want are either Mourinho or Guardiola - neither of them we'll end up with.
Safest paid of hands therefore in my eyes is Rafa Benitez. The only way he'll not end up with the job is if FSG don't want to give him the power he'll no doubt demand.
i think he could do really well with us. we do not have the prima donnas that chelsea have. Yes he did have a high line defensively but i think that Enrique and Johnson are quick enough to deal with it. His team were scoring a lot of goals, maybe he can get us attacking in a more efficient way.
I guess there is only one way of finding out and thats give him the job !
It does concern me though however if they don't appoint Rafa and I don't think they will then any appointment will be a risk.
I just can't believe they did not have a number one realistic target before leting Kenny go.
If they did then fair enough but it doesn't look that way at the moment but lets see
Your owners didn't really Kenny much time and the same will apply for Avb. The tactics that he likes would probably take over a season to fully implement and would probably require a lot new players and investment in order to make them work. I doubt he'd be given that time to do so with you and his man-management was pretty poor as well as failing to realise some basic errors. He'll be a top manager in 10 5-10 years though
don mata, i think the owners will give the new man more of a chance. They have been talking about the next manager being there for at least4/5 years and this is their appointment, their man they want to take us forward. With kenny their hand was forced after the end to last season we had.
AVB can be no worse than Martinez, I am clear on who I want to see as the next Liverpool manager and that is Rafa Benitez.
However, I will give my support to anyone who takes the job.
There is a reason why Chelsea paid what they did to bring AVB in. He was successful at playing an entertaining brand of football. He arrived at Chelsea a year too early... had he been there this year he could have overseen the transition. I think he's almost perfect for Liverpool. He's what the owners are looking for - a young talented manager whose philosophy matches that of the club. He has a good eye for talent too. He's a risk, but an educated risk.
I just don't see the point in bringing Rafa back. I'd take either AVB or Laudrup over him coming back.

I completely support FSG.
But that is a massive risk. If we appoint a manager who finishes fifth next season and does nothing in the Cup competitions and he keeps his job there will be questions. A lot of supporters will say that Kenny got sacked for less.
I agree, we can't hope for a manager to turn it around straight away. But that's why I thought Kenny would have been given another season. The foundation was there to build on.
If they'll give him time then fair enough, but imo you hiring him would probably mean no top 4 for maybe another 2 seasons.
you never know don mata, a good start and anything can happen.
Henrik i agree, its a huge risk and i thought kenny should have been given at least until xmas to see if could have turned it around. But fsg decided different, and i think they are going to have to be patient unless they splash a serious amount of cash in a seriously short amount of time. But we do have some talented players at anfield, who with the right system and manager could do so much better than they did last season.
As much as I love Rafa and would be pleased to see him back I don't object to the idea of a younger manager being brought in. To me Martinez is a good choice, there is something about his humility I like. AVB argued with the press alot but he has fire in his belly. It's not a straightforward choice.
I'd rather take a risk with Martinez than a risk with AVB. The second things don't quite go right with AVB his own confidence may crumble and the press will jump on the 'Chelsea mkii' bandwagon the first chance they get. I think Martinez will be afforded more time and more mistakes than AVB by both the press and the owners
true aggers... i lean slightly more to avb due to the fact he has won a league and a european trophy. Not saying martinez wouldn't do a good job mind.
I think given the right backing Boas could create something special. He does need to accept the fact he might make mistakes, and be willing to change them. But I like his attacking football and style of play, based on his time at Porto.
I would prefer Rafa back, but AVB would be my second realistic choice.
It will all boil down to money.
No manager is good enough to take our squad into the top 4 without huge investment.
It will probably take 4 years minimum and with that we'll have to purchase 2 x £20m players every year to do so.
Then & maybe then will we become a regular top 4 challenger & possibly a bit more!

I can understand any LFC fan wanting some proven evidence of winning trophies. However we must remember that Bill Shankly had won nothing when he came to our club and things didn't work out too badly then.
very true aggers. Either way, whoever it is will receive my backing
He was an unmitigated disaster at Chelsea. lost the dressing room, alienated players, was unwilling to alter his tactical approach and waffled on an on and on, in front of the white hot glare of the media.
He's in his mid thirties and the Chelsea job seemed far too big for him. I would worry if he got the job.
I reckon AVB will get the job either tomorrow or Tuesday
AVB's only fault, in my opinion as a Chelsea fan, was trying to fulfill his remit too fast...
He knew things had to be changed; ageing players to be replaced by younger talent, and changing to a more attacking style, but he tried to do all that over the space of a season... not gonna happen.
Chelsea need a manager to be given REAL time to rebuild and re-fashion the team. I am hoping now that the owner has his "Holy Grail" he might calm down a bit and give someone a real crack...
Only time will tell...
