Roland Garros Day 6

Mahut seems to think it's 1999 and a grass court judging by his style of play, like chip and charge and going to the net on the serve return!
====================================
But what do you suggest? He has not much chance from the baseline...

And Goffin wins the first set! Amazing firepower for such a light frame, lovely movement, too

Two grass courters on clay.

It's just the color difference

Wawrinka is playing strange.. very wrong tactics.

Mahut needs a grass court to showcase his talents basically. He doesn't have a clay game. Just plays a grass game on clay. Mind you it worked for Tim in 2004!

Simon wins third set (2:1) in another tie- break

Quite enjoying it actually...not seen Mahut play on clay before.

Does anyone else remember this, from 2007..

In June, advanced to first ATP final at Queen’s with wins over Kunitsyn, Bjorkman, No. 12 Ljubicic, No. 2 Nadal, and Clement; Held championship point against No. 5 Roddick in second-set tie-break, but lost 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(2);

Mahut never won a title at tour level (250 and above) and not a final since 2007. You have to feel that he would have bettered his career high of 40 had he played in an earlier era of faster surfaces.

Wonder if Mahut will have a revival this year. R3 acheived at both Australian and French Open..a career best at both this year at 30. Wonder if he might try and go beyond R3 at Wimbledon for the first time ever, surprised he hasn't actually. He could do with a good draw there - I assume he'll be a direct entrant but not sure actually.

against all odds, delpo is looking to win this one against Cilic. About to go 2-0 sets.

Federer plays within himself, in second gear. He doesn;t run unless he has to. Just 2 days ago he was trying to get on every ball versus Ungur.

What do you mean against all odds? Because of the injury? No surprise to me.

I agree with Tenez. No offence to Mahut but this is just a practice match for Djokovic. I think Federer's looking good and looking strong favourite for that semi final slot.

@nitb, tenez

On counter-punching play
---------------------------------------------
Personally I prefer aggressive style of play. The kind of play where a player takes his destiny in his own hands, going to a take chance, be innovative and outsmart or out-think you opponent. I'm not saying mindless blasting of every ball, its different.. I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

I don't like any play where a player can't think of anything else than hoping that the opponent will miss. I can't stand when players keep hitting same low risk shot over and over just because they are too scared to go for a riskier shot. I just can't stand that gutless tennis.

@BUt even Murray can be fun to watch.
-----------------------------------------------

The only time I have fun watching Murray is when he is scampering all over and his opponent is hitting winners past him. His game is so ugly, its hard to imagine he has any fans.

--------------------------------------
Yes because he looked very immobile in the last match. He won somehow, but not convincingly enough. Why no surprises for you here?

Are you suggesting Delpo made too much about his injury like Murray did yesterday? Perhaps possible. If a dirty fish enters the pond, other fishes turn into dirt as well. Once something bad is started by a player and then he is allowed to , others will follow suite.

I'm suggesting a Del Potro win today would hardly be a surprise. I don't know much about the injury though.What's happened to Cilic in the last year or 2? Used to be borderline top tenner? Mind you, probably find the answer for myself on line if no-one replies..

--------------------------
It's not what I meant. I meant Federer is hampered. I have been saying this since the 3rd set of his previous match.

It's so obvious.

Cilic ranking peaked at 9 a few years ago now 24. Poorer results since then, never deep in big tournaments. Missed Australian Open this year with knee injury. Probably overall decline due to confidence, injuries and just poor form. More here: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=201158

Federer looks fine to me. I could be wrong though.

Someone throw in some blue clay around Fed feets!

Goffin is superb!!!

posted on 1/6/12

Federer's in poor form from point 1. Impatient, no composure and simply not hitting the ball very well.
He wanted a quick win, is not going to happen. On the contrary, he'll have some grinding to do to get through this in 4.

Goffins wins the second set!!! Came back from break down, too!

Simon and Stan go to the 5th set....surprise, surprise....
