I remember this player well. Dependant on which website you visit he played around 100 games scoring 26 goals for the club between 83 and 86 (rovers.co.uk). Other websites have him down as playing around 85 games and scoring 24.

Thompson was the perfect foil for Garner, ran the channels, won the flick ons and generally took some of the heat off him. They clearly enjoyed playing together and were rightly feared as a decent strike partnership at that level. Thompson was not the quickest, brightest or trickiest footballer, but for sheer guts, hard work, determination and at times no little skill he was a good asset to us at the time.

I remember that period in mu support fondly. We had little money, low gates, little hope and relatively low expectations. But I was rightly proud of our club and players and would defend them to the hilt.

What goes around comes around and now nearly 30 years on we have little money, little hope and continued low expectations, but without any pride or respect at all.

R.I.P. Chris Thompson. We were proud of you and my thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time.

RIP Chris Thompson
Couple of highlights for me too, from the days when being a Rover brought a warm glow to the heart and cold feet on the riverside concrete.

84-85 season Thompson and Garns had 10 apiece before Christmas.

A freezing January Saturday in Cleethorpes and Thommo scored an equaliser that sent us all home happy.

Everton away in the FA Cup 4th rnd 1986...we all cheered Thompsons equaliser(actually went in off Pat Van Den Hauwe) before Lineker finished us off big eared crispy git

I was on that game Garners. Stuck in the bowel of an away end that meant your feet were lower than pitch level. I think Lineker (sp) scored a hat-trick.

I used to hate going to Everton no matter how good we played we always lost!Birmingham was an awful ground also, car park a long way from the ground. Birmingham hooligans police looking the other way, inside the ground just as bad on the terrace with all the Brummies above you in the away end.
