No, no and no.
This has been done before. Rooney might be able to ping a Scholes-esque 50-yard pass, but his short passing game is awful and he dosent have the discpiline or the positional sense to do it.
And thats not even mentioning the fact that he is one of the worlds best forwards. Why waste him in midfield?
Rooney is striker.
I don't see the need to keep talking about putting players in different positions. If we need a midfielder then we need to buy one or promote a CM from youth.
Rooney would be wasted in CM he's a striker that scored 34 goals in one season for the second time in 3 seasons.
bloodred - I'm not saying I want him to play there, I still consider him a forward. It just seems he's trying to base his game more on possession football, so I wondered where Rooney himself might prefer to play
I think he likes playing alongside Welbeck - he said Welbeck wa his pick for United's player of the season.
It just seems he's trying to base his game more on possession football

Well he really isnt doing a very good job. If there's one criticism I have of Rooney, its his ability to keep possession. Like I said, his short passing game over the past couple of seasons has been dreadful.
And in any case, I genuinely think he prefers to play up front.
I'd rather we just went and got a proper central midfielder than waste Rooney. He's brilliant at what he does, i don't see the need to train him into a new postion.
I can see where you are coming from, but it would be a massive loss if we didn't have Rooney up front.

Who knows what could happen to Rooney when he gets older but for now he should definitely stay at a forward. Like bloodred mentioned his short range passing and in particular his attempts at through balls have been terrible recently, hopefully kagawa can teach him a few things!

I wouldn't go as far to say it has been dreadful, but I agree it could have been better. On the whole, I think it's been very good, but his first touch has been sloppy at times and he doesn't thread passes through the eye of a needle as well as he has done in the past.
Fergie has said this before but Rooney plays better when he's on the edge. Sometimes when he drops back he has more time than he needs and that results in sloppy passes.
When under pressure he normally is a much better player.
Rooney's creativity and vision is ridiculously overrated. The odd holywoodd pass out wide doesnt cover the fact that half his passes go astray.
Rooneys best attribute nowadays is his goalscoring abilties. Putting him in CM would be a disaster for all involved
I don't think he'd be a disaster but I agree he is a striker end of story.

His pass completion for this season was just over 80% I believe. Which is normal for a striker/forward.
Not saying that I want to see him drop back by the way, just saying. I am personally more frustrated by the times that he loses the ball through a poor first touch or poor control when dribbling.
Rooney was excellent playing in the CM for those matches he did. He had some through passes that already was scored, so deadly was he in his passing game. Still has a lot to learn and experience in the role. Seems like it got a stuck when Hernandez never did take care of those chances, our strikers except from Rooney has been very wasteful latly. That's why Rooney has to play up front, at least until we get people capable to make more goals. Could see this tactic in the future / 2 years time.

So you put our most prolific goal scorer by far into defensive midfield?
Why not ask De Gea to play up front too?
Not a day goes by where we don’t have a Rooney in midfield, Jones in midfield, Valencia at right back type article and whilst there are pros and cons for each of these arguments the very fact we are having to discuss and debate this kind of thing really shows that there are some key areas that need to be improved over this and possibly next summer. I like many believe we are one possible 2 signings away from having another great team – yes we were close to winning the league this year but even if we had won it I think it would more have been a case of city throwing it away

It seems that people have a thing for playing people out of postion, it won't be long before people say that De Gea has good passing and could be deployed as a midfielder.
De Gea should be out corner taker
De Gea should be out corner taker

He should take the corner and then run really fast and get on end of it, obviously after a flick on.
This had me laughing at my desk:
-------Rooney-------Carrick------
Valencia---Kagawa------Young
------------Welbeck-----------------
VCD – He’s tall and has great distribution. It’s a non-argument…

With a line up like that, we have to move Smalling into Youngs position. He is way taller than Young and we could use the height.
Wile were at it. Welbeck and Valencia have to swap places. As we all know. Tony doesn't have a left foot so he would be limited out right since he cant cut inside without looking like Bambi.
He has a fierce shot on him though, so he would probably score more than that wasteful Dany.
Dany on the other hand, as I've heard by some, has a massive link up play and would flourish on the right side. He would even be better if Rafael was at right back overlapping him, but as I said. And thats to bad really. Young has that spot nailed down since he just swapped places with Smalling.
PS. I have no idea why I wrote all that. I must be drunk.
