Agreed, such few rate him
Agreed, thought he was excellent.
Been reading a few player ratings though - Telegraph and BBC have him as MOTM, whereas ESPN and Goal.com () have him down as the worst England player on the pitch. The contrast is a bit bizzare.
I have to admit, I was unsure on him to begin with.
But his all round play is excellent and very suited to international football.
All he needs to do is make his finishing and composure more consistent (a la his Belgium goal).

Worst player on the pitch!? What are they on?
Our most effective player by some distance.

Welbeck's all round play seems to be extremely underated by the majority of non-united fans, who havent been watching him over a season.
I've been saying from the begginning of the season that this guy will be a star. As you say, all he needs is to become a bit more composed in front of goal.
People on here have been saying that Welbeck was 'painfully average'
-bloodred- (U1222)
I think it might be his body and running style to be honest.
He looks very lanky and languid which makes him look far clumsier than he actually is.

Liverpool fans no doubt? Probably the same ones that gave this article a 1 star with no justification...
Most average players were Milner, Gerrard and Parker.
Looking forward to Rooney coming back. The pair of them have been at their best this season when playing together - they compliment each other brilliantly.
Hart
Johnson Terry Lescott Cole
Parker Milner
Ox Rooney Young
Welbeck
Hope we line up as this when Rooney returns
Not sure about Rooney going straight back into the team to be honest.
Young has been playing quite well in that position. I admit he was fairly anonymous today but he did set up our best chance for Milner.
And his stats show that he's directly contributed to just under a goal a game in his last 11/12 England matches.
Rooney's proven to be pretty unreliable in an England shirt (especially tournaments), Euro 2004 aside.

If you'd watched his combination with Welbeck towards the end of the seaon i reckon you'd think differently.
Young should be on the left for Ukraine (his proper positition), Ox on the right and Rooney should play with Welbeck.
Hart
Johnson Terry Lescott Cole
Parker Gerrard
Ox Rooney Young
Welbeck
Welbeck was good but he wasnt that good he done ok.
I think Welbeck will be a world class striker but cant see how he has got good reviews from this game gave the ball away alot and didn't have a shot on target. I think if Carroll had played the same game everyone would be saying he had a poor game.

You make a good point about the Rooney/Welbeck partnership. They have had a whole season to forge an effective double act. However, so have Young and Welbeck.
If they perform well together against Sweden then I don't see why Rooney should walk straight back into the team.
"I don't see why Rooney should walk straight back into the team"
Because he's Englands best player.
Its quite simple.
>>Welbeck was good but he wasnt that good he done ok.
correct

100% true

nonsense because....

exactamundo and spot on
The best players don't always make the best team though. I would even argue whether he actually is England's best player performance wise rather than based on his reputation.
On another note, brilliant finish from Danny Welbeck against Sweden! (And Carrol's header wasn't too shabby either)
If you'd watched them over the whole season especially the end you wouldnt be saying that.
Rooney and Welbeck are the best strikers in the squad and the best partnership.
I'd say Rooney is the best striker and Carroll the next best
Rooney
This is why I think Rooney doesn't fit into the England team. Works great for Man United, but fails to perform for England. Can't control the ball and can't dribble (great penalty though!)
