The media is hit and miss. Let's face it they have started with the Rooney hype.
As much as i love the lad, he hasn't really done anything to warrant tags such as 'White Pele' (as Roy and a few others have tagged him).
They build up a few playerss and they knock down a few. It is brutal, it is maddening but it doesnt mean they are the barometer of true un-partisan football fans.
I do have to say that I lived in Austria and Germany for a year and English players are rated very highly. Even in Munich! Their local newspaper covers more English football than Bundesliga. And I always had people (when they found out I was English) tell me that they were shocked England hadn't won anything for ages.
And I always had people (when they found out I was English)

Funrob, the Germans would have known you were English the moment you spoke, especially in Bavaria.
As soon as you would have said Grüß Gott they would have had you tagged.
But I do agree with what you say this time.
Some thought I was Australian but yeah, good to finally agree with you on something!

Heard a rumour that the yanks are going to do their own version of OF&H.
This will not be good.
Most British sitcoms are hard to transfer overseas- there’s just too many cultural and social differences between the UK and the US. If they do a like for like OF&H it would be a disaster but I would be interested to see what their American take on the setup of that sitcom would be. I didn’t really like the first few episodes of the American office as it stuck to closely to the original first few episodes of the english series but they started to develop their own characters and now it is a completely different beast and is one of my favourite shows at the moment
Steve Carrell was rumoured to be wanting to do OF&H, with himself cast as Del Boy.
He just doesn't have the comic timing to carry it off.
Hard to think of an american who could, actually. Would be worth a thread of its own.

I disagree with most of the posters on this thread. How can a player's value increase significantly based on one match? Do you lot really think that Levy, Fergie, or any other manager, actually learned anything about Modric from that one game that they did not already know from having watched him over the last 3 years?
Do you really think that scouts only watch the Euros?
If we are basing transfer fees on one game alone then does that mean that Ronaldo is now worth £150m after his display against Holland? Is Walcott now worth £40m after his cameo against Sweden?

"Paddy Crerard was giving out some cryptic messages yesterday. I didn't watch the start of the program but apparently he nervously said that a big deal is going on behind the scenes. I caught the end of the program and when pressed which player he'd love to see at United this summer. He said Luka Modric."

This is what annoys me about the likes of Paddy and Lou Macari. For the last 2 summers they have been quite offensive towards fans who wanted the club to sign a Modric or a Sneijder. The pair of them babbled on about how our midfield was class and how only Ronaldo and Messi could improve our World class squad, etc etc etc. Now Paddy says he'd like to sign Modric? WHY??? Is he now admitting he has been wrong and that the fans have been right all along? Macari says we need one or two top signings to compete in Europe...This is EXACTLY what the fans have been saying for ages and yet he insisted that only Messi and Ronaldo could improve us. Is he now admitting that he was wrong and that the fans have been right all along that we need more quality in the midfield?
It would be nice to hear these guys admit that they were wrong to mock the fans who said we should sign a CM.

"SLM, not for 40-odd million. Perhaps only two players in the modern game warrant those prices: CR and Messi."

What is this based on? We sold Ronaldo for £80m. Is he now only worth half that much? How/when did that happen?
If Ron is worth £80m (and we can be certain that is what United valued him at) then how can you say that no player in the world is worth even HALF that much? And how can Messi be worth less than what we valued Ronaldo at?
I don't think that Modric will sign for Utd but I do think that £40m is excessive for him. To answer Spurs fans' question: Levy does not have as much bargaining power as you may think. For starters, Spurs are not in the CL next season and for all we know there may be a clause allowing Modric to leave under those circumstances. In any event, Modric is a year older than he was last season and, if he wants to leave Spurs, then Levy might not be holding quite as many aces as you think...
Anyway, Chelsea seems more likely if he were to stay in the prem.
Carrell is likeable but I can’t see him as del boy but like I say I don’t think the American OF&H would be anything like our one in anything but name. The office I can understand – it’s the concept a mockumentary with a stupid boss who thinks he’s amazing but isnt’ – fine take that an adapt it but why try and take OF&H just come up with your own sitcom.

You want to see how bad the US Top Gear is. They are not ebven allowed to critisise US made cars, because the show is sponsored by the likes of GM.
Add to that, there is no chemistry between the presenters what so ever, and they are not funny.
Everything I needed to know about America and its media was probably summed up when I was on holiday there last year – Japan was in danger of nuclear meltdown following the earthquake and yet all every news channel was covering was Charlie Sheens and his sacking from two and a half men…
That aside – I have to say I love going there, I try to avoid going during the football season though as I find American football(soccer) commentators really annoying – just the terms they use and the emphasis they put on the wrong things winds me up
