He was better as an 18 year old he hasnt really improved and gone on
He has scored goals etc but his general play should be much better
He has obviously improved! His general play has improved as well. However he seems to be a player who has a stupendous run fo 10 games followed by some horribly average games for a bit. Somehow this average patch coincides with international tournaments. He also seems to work better when he develops a good understanding with team mates, which is why he plays much bette rfor his club (like most other players)
Diving, granny sh**ging and all round c*ntishness aside, his talent is obviously there! He's just had one bad game this tournament, and its his first game so lets give him another chance
this is not a reaction really to last night, Cereal.
Rooney was awesome in Euro 2004.
Looks a pale shadow of that player ever since then when he´s played for England.
"this is not a reaction really to last night, Cereal."
Fair enough OP. That wasn't really directed at you personally, but lot of people doubting him based on last night. I'm not Rooney's biggest fan, but he is definitely a very talented adn effective player
Rooney has lost a lot to his game from his you get years, specifically his touch, passing, dribbling and long distance shooting.
He's become a more rounded player, improving his finishing and movement in the box, but doesn't particularly excel at anything - bar maybe goal scoring - compared to when he was younger.
Last night was typical of many Rooney performances: played pretty poorly but scored. He's had many of them this season, but scored so many that his performances are overlooked.
Still a top player though. Just needs to play as a striker. People think he's a playmaker.
I think he’s gained in some areas and lost in others. He seems to drop deeper these days and as such does make a bit more happen almost in a playmaker role, he drops off, receives the ball, moves it on and gets into space, which is good because it’s actually something England lack without him in the team given our best central midfielders aren’t really playmakers in the cute sense.
However he has gained some inhibition that he didn’t have as a younger man, ne played with less fear, would take on more first time shots and was an aggressive attacker who made defenders feel uncomfortable. He was a very positive player which unsettles teams.
I’d say his game is a little more rounded and mature now but at the expense of a certain spark. Still a great player, imagine a Rooney now and a Rooney then in the same team!
His playmaking abilities are massively overrated. In his younger days he'd do similar things, difference was he'd make a lot more happen. All he really does is drop deep and play the ball wide. Sometimes it's to the teams detriment as he's not far enough up the pitch. He doesn't make those defence splitting passes that he used to.
Rooney is an enigma. Capable of being absolutely unplayable, but the next game anonymous. When he was younger people complained at his lack of goals despite very good performances, whereas now he's getting those goals but without the performances. Shame. We'd have a world class player on our hands if we could get regular the performances he is capable of.
Probably the hair implant
rooting into his brain - had to happen

Hes basically now Michael Owen. peaked early at international level.
Im sure if he was in the starting 11 every game he would even contribute a few goals here and there
TheWalkinDude, I'd agree with that. His game has changed. He's done well to adapt, to be fair, but he doesn't possess world class ability - something he looked like he had when younger.
Before the 06 world cup most United fans would have told you Rooney was, and will be, the better player than Ronaldo. It wasn't that farfetched to assume so, based on the ability both have showed. It's incredible how wrong everyone was.
As of yet, he has certainly not become the player I thought he would be, especially at International level.
I thought he would be better than Gazza at International level but apart from 2004 he hasn't been.
Still young though!
Yeh
Please don't think I'm questioning his ability as a player......Or belittling the man.
I just think he played with less fear, more instinct and just a different style when he was 19 compared to now.
To be fair op, as a United fan, I think he's playing with less ability than when he was younger. You're just not allowed to say it, as the Rooney faithful won't allow it. They'll blame Carrick and Nani for his lack of ability.
His technique and ball control have both regressed from his younger days. He used to have a very good first touch and could strike a ball so cleanly and with a lot of power.
Ronaldo was at Utd with Rooney - Ronaldo has got even better since leaving & is 'world class'
Rooney is 'very good' - huge difference
I normally reserve world class to players who have an international honour - unlikey Portugal will ever be that good though...
Messi (world class) is yet to be internationally a winner - but that could change in 2014
if there was a category above world class to denote singularly outstanding (galactico) perhaps - these two are it

Rooney was awesome in Euro 2004.
Looks a pale shadow of that player ever since then when he´s played for England.
..............................
This really is easy to figure out why.
In 2004 Rooney had the service from Scholes, Beckham, Gerrard (who was good back then) and Joe Cole.
Recently it has been from the likes of Barry, Parker, Milner, Downing etc.
Even Messi would struggle to impress with that lot.
TWD, that's true. His touch looks so heavy in comparison, and even more so when under pressure. As good as he is, you can nullify him on the ball by pressing as he will regularly lose the ball due to his touch. Off the ball is a much more difficult thing to do though.
I think there's time............and forgive me this is gonna make no sense whatsoever..............He tries too hard in a game and it causes mistakes, mis-timed tackles and even frustration, which causes him to either have a bad game or pick up a needless booking.
Not so much this season, he hasn't been booked. But I agre he tries too hard at times and this forces him into giving the ball away. But as I said, he does give the ball away a lot through his touch and dribbling as the ball isn't close enough to him. Still a very good player, just hasn't fulfilled the promise he showed as a teenager.
I wonder what he would have been like had he gone to someone like Arsenal, a team that encourage technical ability, instead of United. Ferguson sometimes has a habit of coaching out some of the skill in players.

..................
This is quite possibly the biggest load off bollox I have ever seen from a United fan.
I can really see how SAFcoached the technical ability out of Hughes, Cantona, Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Ronaldo etc.
God, some of our fans just talk kak for the sake of it.
Ronaldo did actually lose some of his technical attributes in favour of more physical ones. I never said he always does, or that he coaches it all out, but recently out game has become more about power han tehnique, and young players such as Anderson, Nani and Rooney have suffered because of it.
Some United fans think Ferguson is infallible.

Anyone who knows me will know that I am not one of them. I hold SAF responsible for handing the title to City.
As Ronaldo got bigger and stronger his close control and dribbling accuracy got worse. Not to say they're bad, they're great, just regressed. Same thing happened with Nani, Anderson and Rooney.
I dot think it's a coincedence. I think the fact our play is based a lot around pace and power is to do with it. Technically, the team is not the best, and this is shown when we struggle against teams with tight marking and pressing. A lot of people agree there isn't a great technical side to Ferguson's management, and it shows on the pitch.
